SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—Visiting Babson College got an early goal from sophomore
Josie Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) to secure a 1-1 draw with Union College in non-conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at College Park Field.
Babson, which tied Brandeis on Tuesday, is now 0-0-2 on the year. Union, which was playing its third straight opponent from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), is 1-1-1 overall.
First-year
Autum Simon (Sharon, Mass.) recorded her first collegiate point with an assist on Lee's tally, while junior goalkeeper
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) stopped three shots for the Beavers.
Junior Hannah Sams (Farmington, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season for the Garnet Chargers, who got eight saves from classmate Maya Koster (Farmington, Conn.).
Lee scored her first goal of the year in the sixth minute when she ran onto a long thru ball by Simon just outside the box and drilled a shot past Koster and inside the left post for a 1-0 advantage. Koster kept Union within striking distance with a pair of big first half saves, punching a bid from the top of the box by first-year
Emily Bacon (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) over the crossbar in the 19th minute before making a diving stop on sophomore
Lillian McAughan's (Bellevue, Wash.) shot at the right post in the 38th minute.
Cottone also made a pair of terrific first-half saves coming off her line to smother senior Anabelle Thomas' (Rye, N.Y.) shot from the edge of the six-yard box in the eight minute and punching senior Vanessa Jorgensen's (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) bid to tie the game from 25 yards over the bar in the 27th minute.
The Beavers dodged a bullet when senior Anne Pearl (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) sent a volley just over the frame in the 58th minute before Sams scored the equalizer with just over 13 minutes remaining. She settled a loose ball and took one touch before drilling a 35-yard strike over the head of Cottone for her first goal of the season.
Both sides had chances to take the lead over the final eight minutes but were unable to score a decisive goal. Union first-year Kayla Coviello (Somers, N.Y.) pushed a sliding attempt just wide of the left post in the 83rd minute, while Lee ran onto a long diagonal ball and cut back inside before forcing Koster to punch her blast from the right side of the box out of danger in the 84th minute.
The Green and White finished with a 16-11 edge in shots and a 14-5 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
Babson returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Rowan at 12 p.m., while the Garnet Chargers travel to Western New England on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
