BABSON PARK, Mass.— Sophomore
Mack Feeney (North Attleboro, Mass.) scored her first career goal midway through the second half and a pair of keepers combined for nine saves in goal as Babson College knocked off No. 17 Rowan University, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With the outcome, the Beavers pick up their first win of the season and move to 1-0-2 overall while the Profs suffered their first loss of the campaign and fall to 4-1-0.
Senior
Cleo Grignard (Red Bank, N.J.) finished with six saves in the second half for the Beavers after junior
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) stopped three shots in the opening 45 minutes.
It was a tight defensive battle in a scoreless first half, with Rowan ending the frame with a slight 5-4 advantage in shots. The best opportunity for either team came in the 28th minute on a shot by Rowan senior Olivia Giordano (Millville, N.J.) from 10 yards out on the left side but Cottone made a diving save to her left. That was one of just three shots on goal by either side, all by Rowan.
The deadlock was broken by Babson in the 65th minute when Feeney dribbled around a couple of defenders and unleashed a shot from the middle of the field just outside the 18-yard box that sailed over the leap of first-year keeper Leah Edinger (Philadelphia, Pa.) and under the cross bar for her first career marker.
The Beavers were forced into defensive mode the rest of the way as Rowan upped the pressure on the Babson half of the field. The Profs had a pair of corner kicks but could not convert and Grignard made back-to-back saves in the 74th minute on senior Lianna SanFelice (Swedesboro, N.J.) on a long free kick and sophomore Bella Clark (Elk Township, N.J.) on the follow-up.
Grignard made her final save on a header by senior Ava Morales (Old Bridge, N.J.) in the 83rd minute as the Profs continue to apply the pressure, outshooting the hosts 7-1 in the second half.
Rowan finished with a 12-5 margin in total shots, including 9-1 in shots on goal. The visitors took four of the game's five corner kicks.
The Beavers, who are in a string of four home games in five outings, will host Endicott on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Rowan is on the road again next Saturday, visiting Drew for a 12 p.m. contest.
