PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Johnson & Wales University broke a scoreless deadlock off a restart in the 86th minute to defeat visiting Babson College, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle Gro Complex.
The Beavers, who suffered their first loss after going unbeaten over their first seven games, is now 3-1-4 overall. Johnson & Wales has won its last two matches to improve to 4-5-1 on the year.
Sunday's contest began with 27:18 remaining the first half after being suspended following a long weather delay back on August 29. The Green and White outshot Johnson & Wales 4-1 in the early portion of last month's contest and picked right up where they left off forcing first-year Kyla Stamillio (Newington, Conn.) to make a pair of early saves.
Junior
Janiya Ocampo (Pawtucket, R.I.) had one of the Beavers' best scoring chances of the afternoon but rolled a shot from the middle of the box just wide of the right post in the 27th minute after a Wildcats defender misplayed junior
Caroline Sutherland's (Millville, Mass.) long ball. Senior
Meredith Greeley (Ottawa Hills, Ohio) touched a cross by junior
Josie Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) wide of the left post in the 58th minute, while classmate
Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.) had her shot from left side of the box pushed away by Stamillio following a corner kick in the 85th minute.
Johnson & Wales went in front for good with 4:09 remaining on junior Jessica Lee's (Newton, Mass.) third goal of the year following a foul at midfield. Spphomore Jamie Davies (Attleboro, Mass.) collected a pass 30 yards from goal and slipped a thru ball into the box where Lee touched it past Beavers' senior goalkeeper
Cleo Grignard (Red Bank, N.J.) and hit the open net to give the hosts the lead.
Grignard finished with three second-half saves and junior
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) made one in the first half for the Beavers, who outshot the Wildcats 14-7.
Stamilio and junior Ava Vaughn (New Boston, N.H.) combined to make nine saves for Johnson & Wales.
Babson returns to action on Saturday when it travels to WPI at 11 a.m., while the Wildcats visit Connecticut College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
