Women's Soccer Edges WPI, 1-0

Simon's First Career Goal Helps the Beavers Move to 3-0 in League Play for First Time Since 2016

WORCESTER, Mass.—First-year Autumn Simon (Sharon, Mass.) netted her first collegiate goal to account for all the scoring as visiting Babson College defeated WPI 1-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium on Saturday.

With the victory, Babson improves to 4-1-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play while the Engineers slip to 7-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in NEWMAC play.

The first half was devoid of scoring opportunities as there were no shots attempted by either team until WPI's Sera Brunner (Littleton, Colo.) uncorked an attempt in the 32nd minute.  Beavers' junior goalkeeper Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) made her first save following a giveaway at the 40:49 mark and Simon put the visitors in front less than 30 seconds later.

Sophomore Rylie Wesley (Norfolk, Mass.) played a ball over top of the WPI back line to a streaking Simon, who flicked it over Engineers' sophomore goalkeeper Ayla Verheul (Naarden, Netherlands) at the top of the box and into the open net for a 1-0 lead.

WPI had the two best scoring opportunities of the second half but were unable to find an equalizer. Junior Madison Shaw (Cheshire, Conn.) dribbled across the top of the box before sending a blast wide of the right post in the 62nd minute and first-year Tiziri Tizi-Ougdal (Acton, Mass.) settled a bouncing ball in the box and was in alone on Cottone but pushed her bid to tie the game wide of the left post with just over six minutes to play.

Cottone was credited with three saves to pick up her first win of the season for the Green and White, while Verheul made two saves for WPI.

The Engineers finished with a slim 8-6 edge in shots, while the Beavers attempted four of the five corner kicks in the game.

Babson returns to action when it hosts Clark on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and WPI hosts Salve Regina next Saturday at 12 p.m.
