Women’s Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw vs. Brandeis in Home Opener

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior Cleo Grignard (Red Bank, N.J.) and junior Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) each made two saves in 45 minutes in goal as Babson College played to a 0-0 draw against Brandeis Univesity in the Beavers' women's soccer season opener Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Babson, which finished with a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal, begins the season at 0-0-1 while the Judges are now 1-0-1 on the season.

Junior Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla.) matched the Beaver duo between the pipes at the other end, making five saves for her first shutout of the season.

After a scoreless first half, both teams ramped up the scoring opportunities in the second half. Logan made perhaps the best save of the game with 30 minutes remaining, diving to her right to knock away a shot by first-year Autumn Simon (Sharon, Mass.). The Judges had a good chance three minutes later but a shot from inside the box on the left side by sophomore Katie Collins (Littleton, Mass.) sailed over the crossbar.

The Judges had corner kicks in the 72nd and 78th minutes but could not convert. A Babson header by first-year Izzy Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) went wide left, out of the reach of Simon who was looking for the redirect.

Brandeis had two late chances but were unable to capitalize. Collins' shot went high from inside 10 yards with just over two minutes to play, and first-year Moira Koleno (Chicago, Ill.) got free at the top of the box with 10 seconds remaining but couldn't control the pass.

The visitors had a slim 13-12 edge in total shots and an 8-5 margin in corner kicks.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday as Babson takes on Union at 4 p.m. in Schenectady, N.Y., while Brandeis hosts Rhode Island College at 1 p.m.
