Women's Volleyball Falls to Bowdoin and No. 17 Colby at New England Classic

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—The Babson College women's volleyball team wrapped up the inaugural New England Fall Classic with losses to Bowdoin College and No. 17 Colby College inside Scott Gym on Saturday. 

The Beavers, who dropped to 4-3, suffered a four-set (25-19, 18-25, 25-19, 25-22) loss to the Polar Bears in their opening match of the day before seeing a two-game lead slip away in a 21-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-21, 15-6 loss to the Mules in the nightcap.

Juniors Hailey Fouche (Montclair, N.J.) and Allison Molendyk (Danville, Calif.) both recorded nine kills, senior Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.) and first-year Ailsa Munro (Sylmar, Calif.) contributed seven kills apiece, and junior Zoe Ackerman (Aurora, Colo.) dished out 18 assists to lead the Beavers. Senior Sophia Shaw (Novato, Calif.) had a match-high 14 digs and first-year Misaki Harte (San Jose, Calif.) led all players with five service aces in the loss. 

Bowdoin (5-3) never trailed in the opening set and led by as many as eight on multiple occasions before holding off a furious Babson rally for a 1-0 advantage. After recording just five kills while making six errors in the opening stanza, Babson hit .409 and totaled 12 kills in game two to pull even in the match. 

Game three featured eight ties and four lead changes before Bowdoin got a block and two service aces from Zoe Ryu and a kill by Haley Campau during a six-point run to open up an 18-12 lead that it would not relinquish. The Polar Bears saw a nine-point lead disappear in the fourth before taking advantage of back-to-back errors before Kelsey Kim served up an ace to regain a 24-21 edge on the way to closing out the match.

First-year Liberty May (Grapvine, Texas) recorded a season-high 14 kills, Fouche added a season-best 13 kills and Shaw led all players with 24 digs and four aces for the Green and White. Molendyk registered 10 kills, Ackerman had 26 assists and 15 digs, and first-year Quinn Kane (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in with 15 assists in the loss. 

Brady Moseley finished with 13 kills and 14 digs, Cyanne Jones contributed eight kills and nine blocks, and Gabby Grujic had 20 assists and 17 digs to pace the Mules. 

The Beavers led for much of the opening set and get three late kills from Molendyk and two kills and a block from May to secure a 25-21 win. Game two featured 11 ties and four lead changes with the Mules fighting off a pair of set points before May followed up her fifth kill of the stanza with an ace on set point for a 27-25 victory and a 2-0 edge in the match. 

Colby (9-0) scored nine of the final 12 points in game three to extend the match and then overcame an 18-16 deficit in the fourth thanks to three kills by Brady Moseley and a kill apiece by LJ Grant and Sydney Bopp to force decisive fifth set. 

Down 7-2 in game five, Munro and Allen registered back-to-back kills for the Beavers only to see the Mules respond with five consecutive points including a kill and a block by Jones to extend their advantage to 12-4. 

Babson returns to action next Friday when it travels to Lasell at 6 p.m. 

MATCH NOTES
•    The Beavers are now 4-6 all-time against Bowdoin and 6-2 versus Colby. 
•    Prior to its loss to the Mules, Babson had won 47 consecutive matches when taking the first two sets going back to 2021. 
•    The loss to Colby also marked the first time since October 9, 2021, that the Green and White lost while holding an opponent to a hitting percentage below .150.
