WELLESLEY, Mass.—The Babson College women's golf team opened the season with victories over No. 8 Wellesley College and No. 9 Amherst College at the Ann Batchelder Match Play on Saturday at Nehoiden Golf Club.
The Beavers defeated the host Blue 3-2 and were 4.5-0.5 winners over the Mammoths. The Green and White was the only squad to win both matches on day one and its 7.5 points were the most among the six teams.
No. 7 Williams went 1-0-1 while Wellesley and No. 25 Bowdoin both went 1-1 on the day.
Sophomore
Hannah McCarthy (Toronto, Ontario), classmate
Alice Zhu (Orlando, Fla.) and first-year
Vanya Bansal (Noida, India) all went 2-0 on the day for Babson. Zhu and Bansal both shot 76 to finish at 4-over, while McCarthy carded a 5-over 77.
Zhe was a 7&6 winner over Annie Dai of Amherst and a 4&3 winner over Kate Lee of Wellesley. McCarthy beat Amherst's Grace Zhan 1 up and recorded a 2 up victory over Savannah Boyd of the Blue, while Bansal posted 2&1 triumphs over both the Mammoths Renna Chang and Jessica Li of Wellesley.
First-year
Katie Yang (Orlando, Fla.) shot a 7-over 79 in her collegiate debut, while junior
Laura Lu (Chengdu, China) posted an 83. Lu was a 2&1 winner ofverJian An of Amherst and Yang halved her match against Emma Lindemoen of Amherst.
Babson will return for Nehoiden Golf Club on Sunday for a second day of match play starting at 8:30 a.m.
