Isabella Allen (Williamsville, Mass.) led a balanced attack with 12 kills and junior
Zoe Ackerman (Aurora, Colo.) finished with 38 assists and seven service aces to help Babson College defeat visiting Brandeis University in four sets, 25-21, 17-25, 25-11, 25-15, to open the New England Fall Classic on Friday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.
Babson has won two consecutive matches to improve to 4-1 on the year, while Brandeis has dropped two of its last three outings to slip to 4-3 overall.
Junior
Hailey Fouche (Montclair, N.J.) recorded a season-high 10 kills to go along with two blocks, while junior
Allison Molendyk (Danville, Calif.), sophomore
Angelina Holm (Denver, Colo.) and first-year
Ailsa Munro (Sylmar, Calif.) registered eight kills apiece for the Beavers. Holm and Munro each added two blocks, and senior
Sophia Shaw (Novato, Calif.) led all players with 15 digs.
Senior Anna Ertischek (Montgomery, Texas) finished with 11 kills, nine digs, three aces and two blocks to lead the Judges. Sophomore Kennedy Lilly (Atlanta, Ga.) added 10 kills, senior Julia Liang (Sugar Land, Texas) handed out 20 assists, and first-year Lara Demoraes (Plantation, Fla.) totaled 11 digs in the loss.
After splitting the first two games, the Green and White seized control of the match by dominating the third set. Molendyk and Fouche combined for nine of the Beavers' 13 kills and the hosts scored three straight points on the serve of Allen and nine on the serve of Shaw during a 12-1 run to build a 21-5 advantage.
Babson scored the first four points of the fourth set and got a kill from Allen, two in a row from Holm and a service ace by Fouche to push its lead to 12-4. The Judges got as close as seven on a service error, but the Beavers answered back with four straight points, which included a trio of aces by Ackerman to extend the margin to 18-7.
The opening stanza featured 10 ties and eight lead changes before the Green and White closed things out by scoring seven of the final eight points. Munro recorded two kills in the span of three points for a 22-20 lead and Allen followed with consecutive points to make it 24-20 before Munro ended the frame with her fourth kill.
The Judges responded with a strong performance in game two putting away 12 kills while hitting .476 to even the match.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday in Northampton, Mass., as Babson faces Bowdoin at 12 p.m. and Colby at 4 p.m., while Brandeis takes on Smith and Bowdoin.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers are now 16-25 all-time versus the Judges and have won 10 consecutive matches in the series going back to 2014.
• Allen, Fouche, Molendyk, Holm and Munro combined made just six errors and combined to hit .476 in Friday's victory.
• The Green and White recorded 14 service aces in Friday's win and are now 19-1 going back to the start of last season when hitting double digits.
• The Beavers have won the opening set in each of their first five contests this season and are now 2-1 in four-set matches.
