ATLANTA— First-year
Will Boecher (Wellesley, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist and classmate
Connor Hanrahan (Warrenville, Ill.) scored the equalizer with seven minutes remaining as No. 10 Babson College rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against Covenant College (Ga.) in non-conference men's soccer action Friday evening at the Oglethorpe University Soccer Field.
With the tie, the Beavers move to 2-0-2 on the season while Covenant is now 2-1-2 overall.
Senior keeper
Derek Polanco (Verona, N.J.) earned the tie after making three second half saves for the Beavers. He came on in relief of sophomore
JB Montague (Lutz, Fla.), who finished with two stops in the opening 45 minutes.
Junior Jackson Bostrom (Atlanta, Ga.) scored both goals for the Scots, and classmate Daniel Wallis (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Henry Parker (New York City, N.Y.) registered assists. Senior Eli Honeycutt (Chattanooga, Tenn.) made five saves in goal in the draw.
Covenant got off to a quick start, scoring the first goal just 74 seconds after the opening whistle. Wallis sent a long ball from his own half of the field over the Babson defense, and a miscommunication between the Beaver defenders at the top of the 18-yard box created a loose ball and Bostrom buried it into an open net for an early 1-0 lead.
The Scots doubled their lead in the 19th minute on a corner kick. Parker served the kick from the left corner into the middle and Bostrom hit a header in traffic past Montague into the top left corner for a 2-0 Covenant advantage.
The Beavers started their comeback six minutes into the second half on a corner kick. Boecher took the kick from the left corner and curled the ball short of the left post and it bounced off a defender and inside the post to cut the margin to 2-1.
The Green and White had an 11-4 shot margin in the second half but it wasn't until the 83rd minute when it paid off following another corner kick. First-year
Blake Miller (Odessa, Fla.) sent the corner kick into the far side of the box from the right side, which was cleared out of trouble by the Scots. Boecher immediately sent the ball back into the box and Hanrahan knocked a header past Honeycutt into the right side of the goal for his third of the season to even the match at 2-all.
Neither team was able to generate a significant scoring opportunity in the closing minutes and the game ended in a draw. Babson finished with a 15-9 margin in total shots while shots on goal were even at seven apiece. The Beavers had a dominant advantage in corner kicks, 12-2.
The Green and White will be back in action on the same field on Sunday, taking on Oglethorpe at 1 p.m. Covenant will visit Sewanee on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
