ATLANTA—Senior
James Modiano (Montclair, N.J.) scored the only goal of the match in the 61st minute to help No. 10 Babson College defeat Oglethorpe University, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon.
Babson is now 4-0-2 on the year and extended its unbeaten streak to 17 matches going back to last season, while Oglethorpe slips to 3-3-1 overall.
Sophomore
Maxi Martinez (Miami, Fla.) picked up his first collegiate point with an assist and classmate
JB Montague (Lutz, Fla.) made a career-high seven saves while posting his second career shutout for the Beavers.
First-year goalkeeper Sebastian Lewis (Roswell, Ga.) turned away three shots for the Stormy Petrels.
Scoreless just past the hour mark, the Green and White strung together 15 consecutive passes following a restart leading to the go-ahead marker. Modiano took a feed from junior
Ben Cosentino (Farmington, Conn.) 25 yards from goal and found Martinez with a back heel before getting a return pass and drilling a shot inside the right post for his second tally of the year.
Oglethorpe outshot Babson 6-3 over the opening 45 minutes but the visitors had the best scoring chance of the half when Lewis made a sprawling save to deny Modiano's shot from the penalty spot in the 10th minute. Lewis also pushed junior
Will Lloyd's (Lexington, Mass.) blast from distance over the crossbar in the 52nd minute to keep the game scoreless.
Montague made four first-half saves and three more over the final 14 minutes to preserve the clean sheet. He also came racing off his line after Stormy Petrels' sophomore Ethan Martinez (Marietta, Ga.) ran onto a long ball in the 80th minute and cut off his angle forcing the shot off target.
Oglethorpe ended the contest with an 11-10 edge in shots while the Beavers attempted four of the six corner kicks.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Babson travels to Roger Williams at 7 p.m., while the Stormy Petrels visit LaGrange at 6 p.m.
