No. 14 Men's Tennis Defeats No. 36 Stevens in NCAA Tournament Second Round, 4-0

Beavers Advance to Regional Final Against No. 8 Bowdoin on Saturday Morning

BRUNSWICK, Maine— Junior Alexander Merson (Palisades Park, N.J.) and first-year Sabastian Mendoza (Weston, Fla.) registered victories in both singles and doubles as 14th-ranked Babson College defeated No. 36 Stevens Institute of Technology, 4-0, in an NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament second-round match Friday afternoon at Bowdoin College's Pickard Courts.

With the win, Babson earned its ninth straight victory and improves to 21-2 on the season. Stevens winds up its season at 14-8 overall.

Merson, Mendoza and senior Wesley Zhang (Staten Island, N.Y.) clinched the triumph for the Beavers with singles victories after the Green and White claimed the doubles point on wins by Merson and senior Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) at number one and Mendoza and senior Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) at number two.

Mendoza and Anderson posted the first outcome of the day with a 6-2 verdict over sophomore Samvid Andhare (Nagpur, India) and first-year Aidan Miller (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the second flight. The Ducks came back to tie the doubles with a 6-4 victory at number three by seniors Vivekraj Harinarayan (Elkton, Md.) and Matt Luzzi (Greenwich, Conn.) over the Babson tandem of Zhang and first-year Edward Wang (Burr Ridge, Ill.).

The Beavers needed a tiebreaker in the top flight to secure the doubles point. Lepsoe and Merson battled back from dropping the first three games to senior Olof Persson (The Woodlands, Texas) and junior Max-William Kanz (Wethersfield, Conn.) to take a 4-3 lead, and responded again after falling behind 5-4 to force the tiebreaker. Babson went up 4-0 in the breaker before scoring the final three points for the 7-6 (7-3) triumph, giving the Green and White a 1-0 lead.

Zhang doubled the Babson lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win over first-year Noah Pe (Toronto, Ont.) at number five singles before Mendoza put the Beavers on the brink of victory with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over first-year Mihir Parcha (Hyderabad, India) at number six. Merson put the Green and White over the top with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Andhare at number three.

Babson was leading two of the three unfinished matches when play was called. Lepsoe was up 6-3, 2-1 over Kanz at number one and Anderson held a 6-3, 3-4 lead over Miller at number two. Harinarayan won a first-set tiebreaker over Wang at number four for the Ducks.

The Beavers will face No. 8 Bowdoin in Saturday morning's regional final at 9 a.m.
