Aithan Bezanson (Danvers, Mass.) is third and classmate
Matthew Vilela (Framingham, Mass.) is currently in eighth place through five events in the decathlon at the UMass Multi-Meet.
Bezanson, who set personal records in three of five events, totaled 3435 points on Wednesday and is just 41 points off the lead, while Vilela achieved new personal bests in two events on the way to totaling 2930 points.
Bezanson came in fourth in both the 100-meter dash (11.47) and long jump thanks to a season-best mark of 21-feet, 8.25-inches. His top throw of 37-feet, 7.50 inches was his best of the spring and was good for a third-place finish, which was followed by another third-place showing in the high jump after clearing 6-feet, 1.25-inches.
Bezanson concluded the day by coming in fourth with a season-best time of 52.58 in the 400 meters.
Vilela placed eighth with a season-best time of 11.69 in the 100-meter dash, came in second in the long jump with a mark of 19-feet, 6.25-inches and then finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 34-feet, 10-inches. He concluded Wednesday's events by tying for sixth place in the high jump (5-feet, 7.25-inches) and placing 11th in the 400 meters with a time of 55.82.
Day two of the decathlon gets underway at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
