BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior
Grace Starcher (Morristown, N.J.) won matches in both singles and doubles and sophomore
Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at second singles as third-seeded and 15th-ranked Babson College cruised past sixth-seeded Wheaton College, 4-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Tennis Tournament quarterfinal Tuesday afternoon at the Babson Tennis Courts.
With the outcome, Babson posted its fourth straight victory over a conference opponent and improved to 13-5 on the season. Wheaton saw its season come to an end at 6-12 overall.
The Beavers got doubles victories from sophomore
Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) and first-year
Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) at number two, 6-3, and Starcher and sophomore
Riya Matharoo (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) at number three, 6-2. First-year
Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) also posted a singles win for the Green and White.
Babson earned a 1-0 lead after winning the sets at second and third doubles. Soffer and Cristiani were leading 5-2 at number one doubles when the match was stopped after the Beavers claimed the doubles point.
Cristiani defeated junior Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas) at number one, 6-0, 6-2, for Babson's second point. Starcher downed first-year Maya Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) at number six, 6-1, 6-1, before Soffer clinched the match with the triumph over sophomore Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.).
The Beavers led all three of the unfinished matches as junior
Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) was up 6-2, 5-0, at number three; Kamal was ahead 6-3, 2-0, at number four; and Matharoo won the first set at number five, 6-0.
The Beavers advance to the NEWMAC semifinals on Saturday, where they will face second-seeded Wellesley at 12 p.m. at the Batchelor Tennis Courts in Wellesley.
MATCH NOTES
• Babson has won its last 11 matches against the Lyons and are 22-11 all-time against Wheaton in a series that dates back to 1994.
• Tuesday's match was the first meeting between the two schools in the post-season since 2010.
• The Beavers are 10-2 all-time in the quarterfinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament, which includes six consecutive victories going back to 2010.
• The Green and White has won its last 10 postseason matches at home, a streak that dates back to its 2013 quarterfinal triumph over Mount Holyoke.
