Baseball Outslugs Johnson & Wales for Eighth Straight Win, 17-12

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— Graduate student Thomas Parisi (Somers, N.Y.), junior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and first-year Gabe Cushner (Harrington Park, N.J.) combined for eight hits and nine RBI as Babson College outslugged Johnson & Wales University, 17-12, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

With the win, Babson captured its eighth straight victory and improved to 22-8 overall. Johnson & Wales has alternated wins and losses over its last six games and is now 21-13 on the season.

Parisi went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI, Teater was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and five runs scored, and Cushner had two hits with three RBI and three runs scored after clouting his second home run of the season. Graduate student Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) added three hits, senior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) had two hits and an RBI, graduate students Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) had a single and a double and scored three times, and graduate student Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) knocked in a pair of runs. First-year Trafton O'Brien (Wilmette, Ill.) earned his first career win in relief with a two-inning stint, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two.

Senior Xavier Botelho (Rehoboth, Mass.) had a monster game for the Wildcats, going 5-for-5 with three RBI. Classmate Ryan St. Jean (Bolton, Conn.) had three hits and two RBI, fellow senior Zachary Amero (Auburn, Mass.) had a single and a double and three RBI, and first-year Yedan Diaz (Worcester, Mass.) chipped in with two hits, including a double, and a pair of RBI.

The Beavers scored runs in seven of the nine innings off seven JWU pitchers, totaling 17 runs on 17 hits, five for extra bases, and taking advantage of six errors. The Wildcats finished with 12 runs on 15 hits off three Babson hurlers and were aided by three Beaver miscues.

The Green and White jumped on top with three runs in the top of the second, as junior Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) hit an RBI single up the middle and Cushner followed with a two-run homer to left. After JWU answered with a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Amero, Babson added three more in the top of third as Teator delivered a two-run double to right center and Cushner added an infield RBI single.

Guest hit an RBI single in the fourth inning as Babson's lead swelled to 7-1, but the Wildcats stayed in contention with four in the bottom of the inning. After Botelho scored on a throwing error, Amero and St. Jean had RBI singles and Diaz capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.

Babson answered right back with four of its own in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 11-5. One run came home on an infield error, Parisi delivered a two-run single and Julian hit the first of his two sac flies. JWU came right back with two more in the bottom half of the inning as Amero hit an RBI double to right center and St. Jean followed with a run-scoring single up the middle to cut the deficit to 11-7.

After the teams traded single runs in the sixth inning, the Beavers scored three times in the eighth to make it 15-8. Parisi ripped a two-run double to right before Julian hit his second sac fly to center. The Wildcats answered with two of their own in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by Botelho.

The hit parade continued until the very end with each team scoring twice in the ninth inning. Teater hit an RBI single to center and came home to score on a pair of JWU errors, and Diaz and junior Jack Obert (Plymouth, Mass.) had RBI hits for the Wildcats.

Babson is back on the diamond for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader against Coast Guard on Saturday at Govoni Field, beginning at noon. Johnson & Wales will face Lasell for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) twin bill on Friday in Providence.
