Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— Four players recorded wins in both singles and doubles to help 13th-ranked Babson College to a 5-2 win over Springfield College in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Babson earned its sixth straight victory and wraps up the regular season at 17-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play. Springfield had are four-match winning streak snapped and winds up 13-3 overall and 5-2 in the NEWMAC. The Beavers claimed the NEWMAC regular season crown for third time in the last five years and matched the program's single-season record for victories.
The Beavers had little trouble in winning all three sets in doubles to capture the first point of the match. Senior
Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) and junior
Alexander Merson (Palisades Park, N.J.) at number one and senior
Wesley Zhang (Staten Island, N.Y.) and first-year
Edward Wang (Burr Ridge, Ill.) at number three were 6-0 winners while senior
Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) and first-year
Sabastian Mendoza (Weston, Fla.) captured a 6-2 victory.
Springfield captured its first point when Zhang was forced to retire at number five singles. Mendoza gave Babson the lead for good with a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles, Wang followed up with a 6-1, 6-0 verdict at number four, and Anderson clinched the team win with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at number two. Merson finished off a 6-0, 6-2 win at number three, and Lepsoe dropped a third-set super-breaker against senior Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) at number one, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0.
Both teams have earned first-round byes in next week's NEWMAC Tournament. Top-seeded Babson will host the winner of Wednesday's first-round match between fourth-seeded Clark and fifth-seeded Wheaton on Friday in a semifinal match at the Babson Tennis Courts, while third-seeded Springfield will travel to second-seeded MIT on Friday.
MATCH NOTES
• Babson has won 12 straight against Springfield and is 22-6 all-time against the Pride in a series that dates back to 2000.
• The Beavers finished undefeated in league play for the fourth time in school history, previously achieved in 2015, 2021, and 2023.
• Wang improved to 20-4 in singles this season and broke the program's single-season record set by David Weisman '98, who finished a perfect 19-0 back in 1998 on the way to capturing the program's only NCAA Division III singles title.
