Baseball Sweeps WPI, Extends Winning Streak to Five

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished the day with six hits, including a home run and two doubles, while driving in five runs to help Babson College sweep visiting WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Govoni Field.

The Beavers took the opener 12-7 before blanking the Engineers 9-0 in game two to improve to 19-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play with its fifth consecutive win. WPI has dropped nine of its last 10 contests to drop to 12-18 overall and 1-9 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Babson 12, WPI 7
Teator was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, graduate student Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI and classmate Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) singled twice, knocked in a run and scored once to lead the Beavers' 13-hit attack. Fellow graduate student Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) recorded five strikeouts over 5.2 innings to improve to 3-3 with the win, while junior James Clark (Northborough, Mass.) gave up just one run over the final 3.1 innings to pick up his first career save.

Sophomore Matt Shea (Andover, Mass.) was 3-for-3 with two walks and a run scored as five different players recorded multi-hit games for the Engineers. First-year D.C. Brown (Plymouth, Mass.) was tagged with loss after giving up five earned runs on eight hits over 4.0 innings to drop to 1-5 on the season.

The Green and White put up four runs in the bottom of the second inning that included back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) and Julian. Teator scored on a double steal to make it 5-0 in the third, senior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) came through with an RBI base hit in the fourth and Julian followed a sacrifice fly by Wilson with another RBI knock to extend the margin to 8-0 in the fifth.

WPI responded with six runs in the top of the sixth though, beginning the frame with four consecutive hits as first-year Chuck Capello (Northborough, Mass.) came through with a two-run single, while classmate Kaiden Williams (Aurora, Ill.) and Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, N.J.) both doubled to drive in two runs apiece to pull within 8-6. Julian smacked a one-out double to left to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and Teator followed a solo homer by senior Andrew Cash (Marlboro, Mass.) with a two-run double of his own down the left field line in the last of the eighth to give the Beavers a five-run lead.

Game 2: Babson 9, WPI 0
Teator went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored, sophomore Jack Moses (Belle Mead, N.J.) was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, and classmate Jason Finkelstein (Walpole, Mass.) scattered six hits over seven shutout innings to improve to 3-0 with the win for Babson. Graduate student Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) singled, doubled and knocked a run and Julian went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and two runs scored as eight different players recorded at least one hit.

Burns and Cappello both doubled and junior Luke Blandino (Eden, N.Y.) dropped to 2-3 on the year after giving up four runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings on the mound for WPI.

Finkelstein worked out of a bases-load jam with a pop-up to second and fly out to right in the top of the third and the Beavers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI single by Guest. Teator drilled a two-run homer to center as part of a three-run fourth inning, and the Green and White erupted for five runs in the seventh to put the game away.

Wilson brought home Guest with a sacrifice fly, Zeator ripped a single to right to score Savage and Moses hit his first career home run, a three-run blast to center, to make it 9-0. Finkelstein, who struck out four, retired 10 straight batters through the middle innings before Capello doubled with one out in the seventh.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Wheaton at 3:30 p.m., while WPI visits New England College on Monday at 3 p.m.
