Offense Carries Baseball Past UMass Dartmouth for Third Straight Win, 16-6

Basile and Moses Combine for Nine RBI, Beavers Finish with 10 Stolen Bases

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Jack Moses (Belle Mead, N.J.) combined to drive in nine runs and all nine starters recorded at least one hit to help Babson College defeat visiting UMass Dartmouth in seven innings,16-6, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Govoni Field. 

With its third consecutive victory, Babson improves to 17-8 overall. UMass Dartmouth has now dropped back-to-back games to slip to 13-12 on the year. 

Basile doubled, triple and knocked in a career-high five runs, Moses, was 1-for-3 with a walk and four RBI, and graduate student Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored to pace the Beavers' 13-hit attack. Senior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and four runs scored, while graduate student Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) singled twice and scored a pair of runs in the win. 

Graduate student Matt Tempone (Smithtown, N.Y.) homered and sophomore Nick Bartalini (Reading, Mass.), senior Devyn Vezina (Coventry, R.I.) and senior Liam Blesi (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) each drove in a run for the Corsairs, who walked nine times in addition their six hits. Vezina also swiped two bags in the loss. 

The Green and White jumped on top 4-0 in the bottom of the first as Moses worked a bases loaded walk for the first run and Basile followed with a bases-clearing triple to left center that brought home sophomore Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.), Savage and Moses. UMass Dartmouth responded with a five-run second inning that included a lead-off homer by Tempone and an RBI single from Blesi to take the lead before the Beavers answered back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. 

Graduate student Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) and Santos recorded back-to-back RBI singles to give the hosts a 6-5 advantage, Moses brought home Santos with a sacrifice fly and Basile capped the rally with a two-run double to left center to extend the margin to 9-5. Sophomore Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) singled and scored on an error following a double steal, Julian raced home on a delayed steal with runners on the corners, and Moses came through with a two-out, two-run single to left as Babson tacked on four more runs in the in the third to make it 13-5.  

Guest plated junior Owen Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) with a two-out base hit to center and Savage skied a pop-up that dropped between four infielders just in front of home plate allowing Santos and Guest to score to stretch the lead to 16-5 in the fourth. Junior Vinnie Purpura (Hopkinton, Mass.), who came on in relief with two outs in the third, allowed just two hits while striking out three over 3.1 scoreless frames to improve to 2-2 with the win for the Beavers. 

Ian-James McCasland (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs while recording just three outs. 

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it welcomes WPI to Govoni Field for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m., while UMass Dartmouth travels to Plymouth State for a twin bill starting at 11 a.m. on Friday. 

GAME NOTES
•    The Beavers are 17-24 all-time against UMass Dartmouth but have won three of their last four games against the Corsairs. 
•    Guest recorded his fourth consecutive multi-hit game and has now reached base safely in 13 straight outings, while Santos and Liss extended their on-base streaks to 19 games. 
•    Led by three apiece from Guest and Julian, the Beavers' swiped 10 bags in Thursday's win, which is their most since finishing with 10 in a 7-4 victory over Roger Williams back on April 3, 2014. 
•    Babson's 16 runs matches its season high and is its highest scoring output since last year's 19-4 win over WPI on April 21.
