BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior
Wesley Zhang (Staten Island, N.Y.), junior
Alexander Merson (Palisades Park, N.J.), and sophomore
Louis Bourn (Geneva, Switzerland) captured victories in both singles and doubles as 13th-ranked Babson College rolled past Salve Regina University, 7-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis match Thursday afternoon at the Babson Tennis Courts.
With the victory, the Beavers won their fifth straight match, including their third match in as many days, to improve to 16-2 overall and 6-0 in NEWMAC play, while Salve Regina remains winless at 0-11 overall and 0-6 in conference matches.
Junior
Alexander Weber (Baech, Switzerland) and first-years
Edward Wang (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and
Mason Nguyen (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) also captured singles wins for the Beavers, and seniors
Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) and
Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) and first-year
Sabastian Mendoza (Weston, Fla.) were on winning doubles teams.
The Beavers breezed through the doubles sets without dropping a game to earn the doubles point. Lepsoe and Merson downed senior Sam Middleton (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and junior Jacob Faulise (North Kingstown, R.I.) at number one, 6-0; Anderson and Mendoza blanked seniors Alex Colon (Brielle, N.J.) and s Shunsuke Higuchi (Tokyo, Japan) at number two, 6-0; and Zhang and Bourn did the same at number three over senior Mike Keating (Tiverton, R.I.) and graduate student Jose Mayen (Cranston, R.I.), 6-0.
Five of the six singles matches ended with 6-0, 6-0 scores. Bourn downed Higuchi at number four, Weber took care of Keating at number five and Nguyen finished off sophomore John Hawkshead (Park Ridge, N.J.) at number six to clinch the team victory for the Green and White.
After Wang blanked Faulise at number two and Zhang shut out Colon at number three, both by 6-0, 6-0 scores, Merson finished off the team sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 verdict over Middleton.
Both teams wrap up the regular season with NEWMAC matches on Saturday as Babson travels to Springfield for an 11 a.m. encounter and Salve Regina visits MIT at 1 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
• Babson has won its last six matches against the Seahawks and is 9-4 all-time against Salve Regina in a series that dates back to 2001. .
• Wang improved to 19-4 in singles this season and matched the program's single-season record set by David Weisman '98, who finished a perfect 19-0 back in 1998 on the way to capturing the program's only NCAA Division III singles title.
• Combined with his 12 doubles victories, Wang also recorded his 31st victory this season to break Jon Martin's '05 single-season record of 30 combined wins set back in 2003-04.
• The Beavers have won their last nine NEWMAC regular season matches by a combined scored of 64-5 dating back to last season.
