Eight-Run Sixth Inning Helps Baseball Down Tufts, 11-5

MEDFORD, Mass.—Visiting Babson College erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning and three innings of one-run relief from sophomore Tristan Pearl (New Canaan, Conn.) on the way to defeating Tufts University, 11-5, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Sol Gittleman Field.

With its second consecutive win, Babson improves to 16-8 on the year. Tufts has split its last four games and is now 12-14 overall.

Senior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) doubled twice, junior Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs,  N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in, and sophomore Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI to lead the Beavers. Graduate student Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) also drove in two runs apiece in the win.

Junior Owen McKiernan (Durham, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI and senior Cooper Smith (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was 2-for-3 a double, two RBI and two runs scored to pace the Jumbos, who finished with 10 hits. Graduate student Hunter Biendorff (Lone Tree, Colo.) shouldered the loss after giving up three runs in 0.1 innings for a Tufts pitching staff that hit seven batters and walked five more in the loss.

Teator scored in the top of the first after starting the game with a double but the hosts got an RBI single from Smith and a double down the right field line to bring home two more to go in front 3-1 in the bottom of the frame. Liss tripled to deep left center to bring home graduate student Thomas Parisi (Somers, N.Y.) and then scored to tie the game on a sacrifice fly by Savage in the top of the fifth before busting the game open in the sixth.

Despite the benefit of just two hits, the Green and White got plunked five times and pushed across seven of its eight runs with two outs. Parisi was hit by Beindorff to make it 4-4, Liss walked to bring home the go-head run, and first-year Gabe Cushner (Harrington Park, N.Y.) walked after Beindorff plunked both Savage and Teator to help extend the margin to 8-4.

First-year Emmet Christian (Chapel Hill, N.C.) hit Babson first-year Ben Valente (Newton, Mass.) with the bases loaded and Wilson followed with a two-run single to center to make it 11-4.

Pearl, who came on in relief of first-year Chase Burrows (Cream Ridge, N.J.) with Babson trailing 4-3 in the fifth, retired the first eight batters he faced and struck out two while allowing just one run on one hit over 3.0 innings.

Babson returns to action on Thursday when it hosts UMass Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m., while Tufts begins a three-game series with Trinity on Friday at 3 p.m.
