No. 11 Men's Tennis Opens Busy Stretch on Tuesday at No. 36 Brandeis

No. 11 Men's Tennis at No. 36 Brandeis
Tuesday, April 15 | 3:30 p.m.
Cordish Tennis Courts | Waltham, Mass.

SERIES HISTORY

•    Babson is 6-20 against Brandeis going back to 1995.
•    The Beavers recorded their first win over the Judges since 2003 back in 2023 and have now won two straight in the series for the first time since the late 1990s.

LAST MEETING
•    Senior Ole Lepsoe recorded victories at number two singles and number two doubles to help the Beavers defeat an undermanned Brandeis squad, 7-2, on April 13, 2024, in Babson Park.
•    Kerem Ozlale, Jose Gonzalez '24 and senior Wesley Zhang also recorded singles wins for Babson, which led 2-1 after doubles.
•    Dylan Walters and Pierce Garbett were 8-3 winners at number one doubles and Aaron Bayse recorded a straight-set victory at number four singles for the Judges, who lost by default at both number three singles and number three doubles.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    No. 11 Babson (13-2) seized control of the NEWMAC regular season title race with a 5-2 win over MIT back on April 4.
•    Seniors Brady Anderson and Wesley Zhang, junior Alexander Merson and first-year Sebastian Mendoza all were victorious in singles and doubles for the Beavers, who snapped a three-match losing streak versus the Engineers.
•    First-year Edward Wang is 18-3 overall and 5-2 at number three singles, Mendoza is 14-7 overall and 11-3 in dual matches, and Merson has won seven consecutive matches to improve to 11-5 on the year.
•    Merson and senior Ole Lepsoe are 7-2 at number one doubles, Anderson and Mendoza have gone 6-2 at number two and Zhang and Wang own a 5-3 mark at number three this spring.

SCOUTING THE JUDGES
•    No. 36 Brandeis (6-4) has won three straight matches and is coming off a 5-2 victory over MIT last Wednesday.
•    Walters and Aidan Wang-Fan both recorded wins in singles and doubles for the Judges, who won all four of their singles matches in straight sets.
•    Walters is 12-4 overall and 8-2 at number one singles, Daniel Shemesh is 5-3 at number two, Huasen Dong is 6-3 in all singles matches and Wang-Fan is 6-4 with three wins apiece at fourth and fifth singles.
•    Walters and Shemesh are 7-3 on the year at number one doubles, Wang-Fan and Garbett have gone 5-1 at number two with four consecutive victories, and the duo of Dong and Benjamin Kotzen are 5-1 at number three.

BEAVERS SWEEP NEWMAC WEEKLY HONORS
•    Anderson was selected as the singles player of the week and duo of Lepsoe and Merson garnered doubles team of the week recognition as Babson swept the NEWMAC weekly awards for the third time this spring back on April 7.
•    Anderson went 2-0 at number two singles, which included a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory over MIT's Ryan Xiao, while Lepsoe and Merson won both their matches at number one doubles to help the Green and White take sole possession of first place in the league standings.

WEATHERING THE STORM
•    After playing just twice since March 21, the Beavers will conclude the regular with four matches in five days to conclude the regular season beginning on Tuesday.
•    In addition to facing Brandeis, Babson will host Wheaton on Wednesday and Salve Regina on Thursday before traveling to Springfield for its regular season finale on Saturday.
•    The Green and White needs two wins from its final three matches to claim at least a share of its second NEWMAC regular season title in three seasons and the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

RISING UP THE RECORD BOOKS
•    Wang's 18 singles wins are one shy of the program's single-season record set by David Weisman '98, who finished a perfect 19-0 back in 1998 on the way to capturing the program's only NCAA Division III singles title.
•    Coupled with his 11 doubles victories, Wang also is just one shy of Jon Martin's '05 single-season record of 30 combined wins set back in 2003-04.
•    Additionally, Anderson (13), Lepsoe (13) and Merson (13) are just four wins away from matching the Beavers' single-season record of 16 doubles wins held by Martin (2003-04), Mike Brooks '05 (2003-04), Brandon Rosenbluth '18 (2016-17) and Parker Law '23 (2022-23).

UP NEXT
•    The Beavers will host Wheaton on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
