ATLANTA — Senior
Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and junior
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) produced points in both singles and doubles for No. 15 Babson College, but No. 3 Emory University captured four singles matches to pull out a 4-3 victory over the Beavers in a non-conference women's tennis match Friday afternoon at the Woodruff PE Center Tennis Courts.
Emory, which has played 11 straight matches against nationally ranked opponents, improved to 12-3 on the season while the Beavers had a two-match winning streak stopped and fell to 7-2 overall.
The Beavers captured the doubles point when Olivia and Matia defeated juniors Izzy Antanavicius (Villanova, Pa.) and Iris Berman (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the number one flight, 6-2; and sophomore
Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and first-year
Alessandra Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) downed junior Emily Kantrovitz (St. Louis, Mo.) and graduate student Dakota Fordham (New York, N.Y.) in the second flight, 6-2. Kantrovitz and Fordham were the third-ranked doubles team in Division III in last fall's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
Babson earned victories in the top two singles flights, with Olivia outlasting Kantrovitz, who was ranked third in Division in last fall, at number one, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, and Matia defeating Antanavicius, who was ranked fifth in Division III, 6-3, 6-2.
The rest of the singles matches belonged to the host Eagles. Berman got past
Chaniel Soffer at number three, 6-2, 6-3; sophomore Yanire Marte (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) was too strong for
Alessandra Cristiani at number four, 6-2, 6-2; senior Eliza McPherron (Weston, Mass.) defeated junior
Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) at number five, 6-3, 6-2; and Fordham put away first-year
Mia Sorrentino (Miami, Fla.) at number six, 6-2, 6-2.
Both teams will take on No. 17 Case Western Reserve in their next match this weekend at the Woodruff Courts as the Beavers will play the Spartans on Saturday at 11 a.m. and the Eagles will host them on Sunday at 12 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
• Babson is 0-2 all-time vs. Emory dating back to last season.
• The Beavers are 4-3 this spring against teams ranked in the ITA Top 40, and 13-11 against ranked teams going back to 2023.
• The Green and White suffered just their second loss in nine matches this spring when leading after doubles.
