Aithan Bezanson (Danvers, Mass.) set a new school record for points on the way to placing third in the decathlon at the UMass Multi-Meet, which wrapped up on Thursday afternoon.
Bezanson finished with 6355 points to qualify for the Division III New England Championships while surpassing the previous mark of 6159 points achieved Dominic Esposito '15 back in 2015. First-year
Matthew Vilela (Framingham, Mass.) also qualified for D3 New England's and placed 10th overall with 4956 points. Bezanson's scored ranks also ranks fourth among Division III competitors in the decathlon, while Vilela currently ranks 31st.
Bezanson was the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.56, came in ninth with a throw of 90-feet, 4-inches in the discus and then took seventh with a season-best mark of 10-feet, 6-inches in the pole vault. He concluded the meet in style taking first place with a throw of 166-feet, 90-inches in the javelin and won the 1500-meter run by nearly eight seconds with a time of 4:34.61.
Vilela came in 11th in the 110-meter hurdles (18.56), finished sixth with a mark of 95-feet, 4-inches in the discus and took ninth by clearing a season-best height of 9-feet, 10-inches in the pole vault. He recorded his longest throw of the spring (112-feet, 8-inches) to claim ninth place in the javelin and wrapped up the meet with a time of 5:31.89 in the 1500 meters.
Babson returns to action on Friday when it travels to New London, Conn., to compete in the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College.
