No. 21/24 Baseball Drops First NEWMAC Game at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Senior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) tied the program's all-time record for stolen bases, but No. 21 D3baseball.com/No. 24 ABCA Babson College suffered a 13-1 loss at MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Fran O'Brien Field.

Babson, which had defeated MIT last week at home, drops to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the loss. The Engineers are now 7-10 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC.

Santos went 1-for-3 and swiped the 55th bag of his career in the top of the first inning, while junior Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) was 2-for-3 with a home run to lead the Beavers. Senior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) also singled and scored in the loss.

First-year John Spivey (St. Louis, Mo.) went 3-for-4 with a homer, two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored, while graduate student Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.), senior Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) and sophomore Louis Hernandez (Glastonbury, Conn.) all went deep for the Engineers, who finished with 13 hits. Junior Chase Rubin (Arlington, Va.) improved to 3-2 with the win allowing just one run on five hits over six innings.

Schoenfeld led off the bottom of the first with a solo blast to right, Spivey followed with a double and Zev Moore (Jerusalem, Israel) made it 2-0 with an RBI single to center. The Green and White stranded runners in each of the first three innings before cutting its deficit to half on Sadowsky's homer to left with one out in the fourth.

The Beavers had a pair of runners in scoring position with one out in the fifth, but was unable to score and MIT busted the game open in the bottom of the frame. Spivey hit a three-run homer to left to make it 5-1 and Tubbs added a two-out, two-run bomb to make it a six-run game. Hernandez led off the sixth with a solo homer that sparked a six-run rally that included RBI singles from Schoenfeld and graduate student CJ McCarthy (Pawling, N.Y.), as well as a run-scoring double by Spivey.

Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Trinity at 3:30 p.m., while MIT takes on Southern Maine on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
