NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I.— Sophomore Jonathan Hanscom (Hadley, Mass.) turned in an impressive performance in the 10,000 meters to lead the Babson College track & field teams on day one of the Bryant University Black & Gold Invitational on Friday at the Track and Turf Complex.

Hanscom finished with a career-best time of 32:43.11 to place second among Division III runners and ninth overall. His time bettered his previous best of 34:15.89 recorded at last year's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship meet. The performance qualified Hanscom for the New England Division III championships later this spring.

Babson had four competitors in the hammer throw, led by first-year Brett White (Barrington, R.I.), who placed sixth among Division III athletes with a mark of 141-feet, 9-inches. Junior Joseph Addotta (Ridgefield, Conn.) placed 10th in Division III with a throw of 109-feet, 5-inches, sophomore Coleman Hayes (New York, N.Y.) was 12th in Division III with a mark of 99-feet, 6-inches, and first-year Nick Elward (Ipswich, Mass.) was 13th in the division with a throw of 90-feet, 9-inches.

Five Beavers competed in the discus event, with Addotta, Elward and Hayes finished 4-5-6 among Division III throwers. Addotta had a mark of 124-feet, 1-inch, Elward had a throw of 112-feet, 9-inches, and Hayes hit the mark at 110-feet, 7-inches. White was eighth in the division with a throw of 95-feet, 6-inches, and first-year Matthew Vilela (Framingham, Mass.) was 10th with a mark of 89-feet, 3-inches.

Two members of the Babson women's team were in action on Friday. Junior Alexandra Kirkpatrick (Middleborough, Mass.) competed in the 10,000 meters, finishing in a time of 42:30.70 for sixth place among Division III runners, and sophomore Ava Newton (Danvers, Mass.) recorded a mark of 81-feet, 2-inches in the hammer throw with place 11th in the division.

The Invitational concludes with the majority of the events on Saturday.
