Chase Burrows (Cream Ridge, N.J.) tossed five shutout innings of relief to help No. 20 D3baseball.com/No. 29 ABCA Babson College defeat visiting Suffolk University 13-3 in eight innings in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
Babson, which has won four of its last five games, improves to 9-3 overall. Suffolk has dropped its last two outings to slip to 6-11 on the year.
Liss went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and four runs batted in, Teator was 2-for-4 with a three-run shot and senior
Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) singled twice and drove in two runs for the Beavers. Sophomore
Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while graduate student
Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) singled twice, knocked in a run and scored once in the win.
Burrows struck out two and allowed just one hit over 5.0 innings to improve to 3-0. First-year
Dillon James (North Attleboro, Mass.) made his first career start for the Green and White, allowing three runs over 3.0 innings in a no-decision.
Junior Sam Armbruster (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Colin Flynn (Dorchester, Mass.) both singled twice to lead the Rams, who finished with eight hits in the loss. Junior TJ Dimitriou (Norwood, Mass.) gave up five earned runs over 5.2 innings and dropped to 0-3 on the season with the loss.
Babson took advantage of a two-out error to take a 4-0 lead on Liss' three-run blast to right in the bottom of the first. Suffolk struck back in the top of the third though as senior Max Martin (Walpole, Mass.) stroked a one-out double to center and classmate Max Iorio (Hull, Mass.), Armbruster and sophomore Jack Mihalchik (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) followed with three straight RBI singles to make it a one-run game.
Dimitriou allowed just one hit through the middle innings before junior
Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) beat the throw down to first confirming a strikeout to start a sixth-inning rally. Liss put runners on the corners with a two-out knock to right, Sadowsky and sophomore
Jack Moses (Belle Mead, N.J.) made it 6-3 with back-to-back RBI singles and Teator followed with a three-run homer to right extending the lead to 9-3.
Savage tacked on the final run of the sixth with an RBI singled that brought home graduate student
Thomas Parisi (Somers, N.Y.), and the Green and White scored three more runs over the next two frames to put the game away. Hvozdovic led off the seventh and raced home on a sacrifice fly by Liss, Sadowsky brought home D'Avanzo with an RBI single to left and sophomore
Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) led off the eighth with a pinch hit double and came around to score the final run on a sacrifice fly to deep left center by junior
Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.).
Both teams are back in action at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday as Babson travels to Roger Williams while Suffolk hosts UMass Dartmouth.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 28-18 all-time against Suffolk and have won three straight games in the series.
• Liss has driven in nine runs over the last three games and is tied for second on the team with three multi-RBI games behind Sadowsky, who knocked in two runs for the fifth time this season in Wednesday's win.
• Sadowsky (6), Savage (5) and Liss (4) all extended their hitting streaks, while Hvozdovic has now reached base safely in nine consecutive outings.
• Babson is now 8-0 on the year when allowing five runs or fewer.
