No. 20/29 Baseball's Rally Comes Up Short in 9-8 Loss at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I.—Junior Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) and sophomore Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) each drove in four runs but No. 20 D3baseball.com/No. 29 ABCA Babson College fell to Roger Williams University 9-8 in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Paulino Field.

Babson, which had its two-game winning streak snapped, is now 9-4 on the year. Roger Williams has won four of its last six outings to improve to 7-9 overall.

Liss was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and four runs batted in, while Hvozdovic singled, walked, knocked in four runs and scored once for the Beavers, who finished with nine hits and eight walks in addition to getting plunked four times. Senior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks and first-year Gabe Cushner (Harrington Park, N.J.) finished 2-for-4 with a double in the loss.

Senior Will Florio (San Jose, Calif.) doubled, walked twice and drove in two runs, classmate Owen Hibbard (Roxbury, Conn.) was 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and fellow senior Sam Weigel (Brookfield, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored to lead the Hawks. Sophomore Evan Beattie (Saunderstown, R.I.), one of seven pitchers to appear on the day, earned the win to improve to 1-1, while junior Ryan Camp (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded the final three outs to record his first save.

Hvozdovic came through with a two-run single to left center and Liss followed with an opposite field knock to left that brought home Guest for a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Hvozdovic walked to bring home another run in the fourth for a 4-2 edge but the Green and White left the bases loaded and Roger Williams went in front for good by scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Hawks loaded the bases thanks to a walk, a single and an error before pulling even at 4-4 on a two-run single by Hibbard. Florio smacked a double to right to bring home two more two batters later and then scored along with Weigel on the third error of the inning to make it 8-4.

Babson stranded multiple runners in both the fifth and sixth innings before cutting into its five-run deficit in the eighth. Graduate student Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) led off with a single and later scored on an RBI ground out by Hvozdovic, and Liss blasted a three-run homer to right to pull the Beavers within 9-8. The Green and White left a pair on the bases in the eighth but had another golden opportunity to tie or take the lead after loading the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth thanks to a pair of walks and an error.

Camp got the force out at home on a ground ball to second for the first out and a short fly ball to left for out number two before escaping the jam with another ground ball to second.

Junior Vinnie Purpura (Hopkinton, Mass.) took the loss to drop to 1-2 on the year after giving up three earned runs over 3.0 innings for the Beavers. Sophomore Brennan Shapiro (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) and first-year Bobby Burk (Kensington, Md.) did not allow a hit over the final three innings out of the bullpen.

Babson returns to action on Friday when it hosts Emerson in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Roger Williams travels to Nichols for a twin bill on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
