WESTWOOD, Mass.—Four Babson College student-athletes were recognized when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its Sportsmanship Teams for the 2024-25 winter season last week.
The award is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each institution in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season.
Men's Basketball
Tyler Lauder | Jr. | Malvern, Pa.
Lauder started 10 of his 25 games for the Beaves this season, averaging 2.1 points and 3.0 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game while shooting 54.8 percent from the field (23-of-42). He also registered 28 assists, 14 steals and six blocked shots. The 6-7 forward scored a season-high seven points in two games against Coast Guard on January 23 and February 22, and grabbed a season-high seven rebounds on three different occasions. He collected at least one board in 23 of his 25 games, including the final 15 games of the campaign.
Women's Basketball
Abby Miller | Sr. | Millis, Mass.
Miller saw action in 19 games with two starts for the Beavers, averaging 8.3 minutes per game. She averaged 2.6 points and 1.0 assist per outing, shooting 42.9 percent (18-of-42) from the field and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from 3-point range. The 5-7 guard also grabbed 14 rebounds and registered 14 steals and four blocked shots. Miller scored in double digits in back-to-back games against Mount Holyoke (14) and Clark (13) with seven assists in the final two games of the regular season, hitting 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc.
Men's Swimming and Diving
Matthew D'Elia | Sr. | Old Bridge, N.J.
D'Elia finished off an outstanding career for the Beavers, particularly in butterfly events. His top performance this season came in the 200 butterfly where he took fifth place at the NEWMAC championships and posted a program-record time of 1:52.48. He placed eighth in the 100 fly at this year's NEWMACs in a time of 50.40 seconds, and he also owns the third-fastest time in program history in the 100 fly with a 50.32 set back in 2023. D'Elia swam on Babson's 200 free relay B team that finished 13th in 1:46.10.
Women's Swimming and Diving
Sophia Silver | Sr. | Fayetteville, N.Y.
Silver was a solid contributor for the Beavers in the freestyle events. Her season-best times of 2:02.62 in the 200 free and 5:33.14 in the 500 free were both fourth-best on the team this season. She also swam a season-best time of 26.73 seconds in the 50 free, and 56.13 in the 100 free, which was the fifth-best on the squad. Silver placed 28th in the 200 free and 33rd in the 500 free at this year's NEWMAC Championships, and she anchored Babson's B team in the 800-meter relay which finished 15th.
