MARLBOROUGH, Mass.—After capturing three conference tournament championships, two regular season titles and top-four finishes in six of eight sports, Babson College claimed its third consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Presidents Cup on Thursday.
The Presidents Cup is an all-sports award presented to the top overall men's and women's programs in the conference and is determined using a weighted points system based on the order of finish during both the regular season and championship play going back to 2013.
"At Babson, we are proud of our committed student-athletes and the many contributions they make to our campus community on the playing field and in the classroom," said
Stephen Spinelli Jr. MBA'92, PhD, president of Babson College and Chair of the NEWMAC Presidents Council. "We are grateful that our athletics program has been honored with the men's NEWMAC Presidents Cup Award for the third consecutive year. Each member of our athletics program—from our passionate student-athletes to our dedicated training staff and coaches—plays an important role in upholding and advancing Babson's reputation across the country and around the world. I am thankful for their leadership and the example they set for student-athletes everywhere."
The Beavers came in atop the standings with 9.21 points, while second-place MIT (8.95) and third-place Springfield College (8.91) were separated by just four one-thousands of a point in one of the closest finishes in the 12 years of the competition. Coast Guard Academy placed fourth with 8.52 points, while WPI (8.14) rounded out the top five.
Soccer and tennis both followed up their regular season titles by claiming conference tournament championships, while lacrosse won its third straight NEWMAC Tournament title after tying for second place in the regular season standings. Soccer advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the first time since 1991, tennis set a single-season record with 22 wins and reached the national quarterfinals for the first time in program history, and men's lacrosse won its NCAA opener for the third consecutive season before falling in the second round.
"To win the NEWMAC Presidents Cup for the third year in a row is a tremendous accomplishment," said Babson College Pamela P. and Brian M. Barefoot Associate Vice President for Athletics and Athletics Advancement
Mike Lynch. "Our student-athletes, coaches and staff work tirelessly to make sure we are competing at the highest level and this achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone in our department. I'm proud of the success we had this season and earning this award is a great honor."
Cross country came in third at the conference meet for the fourth year in a row with its lowest point total in program history, basketball placed third during the NEWMAC regular season, and swimming & diving came in fourth at the conference championship back in February. Track & field added a fifth-place showing at its league meet and baseball came in sixth during the regular season.
