No. 18/26 Baseball Wraps Up Florida Trip with 11-8 Loss to Amherst

AUBURNDALE, Fla.— Junior Tyler McCord (Langhorne, Pa.) reached base four times on two hits and two walks and scored three runs, and Amherst College rallied from a 6-2 deficit to defeat No. 18 D3baseball.com/No. 26 ABCA Babson College, 11-8, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday morning in the Beavers' final appearance at the RussMatt Invitational.

With the loss, Babson completes its week in Florida with a 4-3 record to move to 7-3 on the season. Amherst won its second straight game to improve to 5-4 overall.

Graduate students Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and Thomas Parisi (Somers, N.Y.) both belted two-run homers and senior Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) also drove in two runs for the Beavers, which got their eight hits from eight different players. Graduate student Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) and first-year Gabe Cushner (Harrington Park, N.J.) each had a double, and Savage and graduate student Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) both scored twice.

Senior Jack Sampedro (Miami, Fla.) had two hits and knocked in two runs for the Mammoths. Senior Ryan McIntyre (Larchmont, N.Y.) and first-year Matthew Chen (Taipei, Taiwan) collected two hits apiece, and sophomore Charlie LaFrenier (Norwalk, Conn.) drove in three in the victory.

After Amherst took a first-inning lead when senior Jack Boyle (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off with a triple to right and scored on an infield grounder, Babson took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases with no outs, sophomore Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly to left and Sadowsky delivered a two-run single up the middle.

The Beavers extended their lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning. After LaFrenier drew a bases-loaded walk for Amherst in the top half of the inning, Julian led off the bottom half with a double to left and scored on Santos' single to right. Savage followed with his first homer of the season on a two-run blast to left.

The Mammoths bounced back to tie the score with four runs in the top of the sixth. Two runs came home on a Babson error with the bases full and LaFrenier knocked in a pair on a bases-loaded single to left. After first-year reliever Walker Dellinger (Houston, Texas) struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth, Amherst tacked on another four runs in the top of the seventh. Sampedro hit a two-run single to right center to spark the rally as the Mammoths' lead grew to 10-6.

McCord scored again for Amherst in the top of the ninth after hitting a single to left, stealing two bases and coming home on McIntyre's RBI single to left. The Beavers made a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth as Cushner doubled to left and Parisi cracked a two-run homer to right, but Sampedro came on to retire the next three batters to close out the win for the Mammoths.

Dellinger recorded the win (1-1) for Amherst, giving up two runs on three hits in three innings while striking out five. Senior Matt Milone (Amston, Conn.) took the loss (0-1) in relief for the Beavers.

Babson returns to Massachusetts to host MIT in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and home opener on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Govoni Field. Amherst continues its Florida trip against Framingham State on Friday at 12 p.m.
