Edward Wang (Burr Ridge, Ill.) all recorded victories in both singles and doubles to help No. 18 Babson College defeat No. 24 North Carolina Wesleyan University, 5-2, in non-conference men's tennis action at the Pauley Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon.
With its sixth consecutive win, Babson improves to 11-1 on the year. North Carolina Wesleyan has dropped back-to-back matches to slip to 5-5 overall.
The Green and White secured the doubles point as Merson and senior
Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) edged Luca Knese (Koln, Germany) and Albert Sitwell (Wotton-under-Edge, UK) 6-4 at number one, while Zhang and Wang topped the Battling Bishops' duo of Brody Brice (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and Shori Nishizoe (Osaka, Japan) 6-4 at number three. North Carolina Wesleyan's Martin Cardestig (Kungsbacka, Sweden) and Bernardo Messineo (Buenos Aires, Argentina) were 6-4 winners over Babson's pairing of senior
Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) and first-year
Sebastian Mendoza (Weston, Fla.) at number two doubles.
Five of the six singles matches were decided in three sets, three of which were won by the Beavers. Wang rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory over Bohdan Zhylchuck (Rivne, Ukraine) at number two, Merson came back from a set down to defeat Sitwell 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 at number three and Zhang was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 winner at number four.
Mendoza also won a first-set tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 triumph at number five singles for the Green and White.
Anderson won the opening set before dropping a tight match to Knese at number one singles, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), 12-10), and sophomore
Louis Bourn (Geneva, Switzerland) suffered a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 loss to Messineo at number six.
Babson wraps up its west coast trip on Friday when it meets No. 32 Chapman in Orange, Calif., at 4 p.m. ET.
MATCH NOTES
• Thursday's match was the first all-time between Babson and the Battling Bishops.
• The Beavers have now won six consecutive matches at number one doubles and third, fourth and fifth singles dating back to last Sunday.
• Wang recorded his 17th singles win of the season on Thursday, which is already the most by any Babson player since 2014-15 and just two away from the program's single-season record of 19 held by 1998 NCAA Division III singles champion David Weisman '98.
