Chase Burrows (Cream Ridge, N.J.) allowed just one run over 3.2 innings out of the bullpen to help No. 30 ABCA Babson College defeat No. 13 D3baseball.com/No. 11 ABCA Baldwin Wallace University, 5-4, in non-conference baseball action on Sunday at Legends Field.
With the win, Babson concludes its opening weekend of the season at 3-0. Baldwin Wallace is now 2-2 on the year with the loss.
First-year
Gabe Cushner (Harrington Park, Ill.) went 2-or-4 with a double, junior
Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) singled twice and drove in a run, and graduate student
Thomas Parisi (Somers, N.Y.) doubled, walked twice and scored a pair of runs for the Beavers. Burrows struck out one and gave up one run on three hits to earn the win in his collegiate debut, while junior
Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) picked up his second save. Sophomore
Jason Finkelstein (Walpole, Mass.) got the start and gave up three runs on four hits while striking out two in 4.0 innings of work.
Senior Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Township, Ohio) was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored and junior Sean Kolenich (Parma, Ohio) singled twice and drove in a run to lead the Yellow Jackets' eight-hit attack. Senior Patrick Straub (Naperville, Ill.), who settled for a no-decision, fanned seven and gave up just two runs on five hits over 6.0 innings, while sophomore Jake Heatherington (Bellaire, Ohio) shouldered the loss to fall to 0-1after allowing two earned runs to go along with five strikeouts and three walks in 3.0 innings of relief.
Baldwin Wallace put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the first using an infield single by Kilbane, an RBI double to the gap in left center by Johnson and an RBI knock by Kolenich to grab a 2-0 lead. Finkelstein escaped a one-out, bases loaded jam in the second and the Green and White tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the third.
Julian and Basile singled around a walk by Parisi to load the bases, graduate student
Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) plated the first run with an RBI ground out and got in a rundown one batter later allowing Parisi to score on a throwing error. Junior Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider (Grove City, Ohio) put the Yellow Jackets back in front with an RBI double in the fourth, but the Beavers got to Heatherington for three runs in the seventh despite recording just one hit.
Cushner got things started with a double to left center and Julian, Parisi and Basile drew three straight free passes to force in the tying run. Senior
Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) got plunked to bring home Julian and Parisi scored on a bases-loaded throwing error one batter later to make it 5-3. Kilbane doubled with two outs in the bottom of the inning and scored on senior Nathan Zinn's (Columbus, Ohio) ground-rule double to cut the margin to one, but Burrows retired the final four batters he faced before handing the ball to Teator, who worked around a one-out walk with a strikeout and a ground out to close the door in the ninth.
Both teams return to action next Saturday at 12 p.m. as Babson travels to Salem State for a doubleheader, while Baldwin Wallace meets Swarthmore in Lexington, S.C.
