Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 19/30 Baseball Dealt First Loss by MSOE, 8-0

DAVENPORT, Fla.—Graduate student Kellen Pate (Rogers, Ark.) tossed seven shutout innings and the Milwaukee School of Engineering broke open a tight game with six runs in the top of the ninth to defeat No. 19 D3baseball.com/No. 30 ABCA Babson College, 8-0, on Friday morning at the Northeast Regional Park.

Babson, which suffered its first loss of the year, is now 3-1 on the year. MSOE snapped a three-game skid to improve to 3-3 overall.

Graduate student Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) shouldered the loss for the Beavers to fall to 1-1 on the year despite striking out five and allowing just one earned run over 7.0 innings. Sophomore Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with a double, while graduate student Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) and sophomore Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) both singled in the loss.

Sophomore Christian Bosque (Palmetto, Fla.) went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in, while first-year Charlie Claas (Janesville, Wis.) singled, knocked in a pair of runs and scored twice for the Raiders. Pate fanned seven and gave up four hits to improve to 2-1 with the win before turning the ball over to sophomore Eric Williamson (Franksville, Wis.), who allowed just one base runner in two innings of relief.

MSOE was unable to take advantage of back-to-back singles in the top of the second and Pate worked out of his only real jam in the bottom of the frame getting Santos to fly out to centerfield with the bases loaded to keep the game scoreless. Spalter breezed through the third and struck out the side in the fourth before the Raiders put up a pair of runs despite just one base hit in the fifth.

Sophomore Joe Stried (Janesville, Wis.) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on an error for the game's first run before Bosque made it 2-0 with a two-out, RBI double to right center. The Green and White stranded runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth and was unable to take advantage of Liss' one-double in the sixth before MSOE broke the game open in the ninth.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson faces Rhodes at 9:30 a.m. and Coe at 1 p.m. in Auburndale, Fla., while MSOE meets Webster at 9:15 a.m. and TCNJ at 1:30 p.m.
