No. 18 Men's Tennis Begins Busy Stretch in Southern California on Sunday

WHAT TO KNOW

•    The Babson men's tennis team will play seven matches in the span of six days in southern California beginning against No. 6 Middlebury on Sunday afternoon. 
•    The Beavers will face five nationally-ranked opponents and are set to play twice on both Monday and Tuesday before concluding the trip with matches top-40 foes on Thursday and Friday. 

SERIES HISTORY
vs. Middlebury: Babson is 0-2 and last met the Panthers back in 2018.
vs. Salisbury: The Beavers are 1-0 thanks to a 5-4 win over the Sea Gulls back in 2012. 
vs. Glendale CC: Babson is 1-0 after defeating the Vaqueros 6-3 in March 2022. 
vs. Grinnell: The Beavers are 2-3 all-time against the Pioneers and Tuesday's match will be the first between the programs since 2017.
vs. Whitman: Babson is 1-0 all-time after defeating the Blues 8-1 in 2023. 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    No. 18 Babson (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season falling to No. 3 Tufts 7-0 back on March 2. 
•    First-year Sebastian Mendoza, senior Brady Anderson and junior Alexander Merson all dropped tight matches in singles for the Beavers, which includes Mendoza forcing a first-set tiebreaker before falling 7-6, 6-3 at number five. 
•    Wang is 4-2 in dual matches and 13-2 overall in singles play, Mendoza and sophomore Mattias Harrell are second on the team with seven wins apiece, and Anderson is 3-1 in the top two singles flights and 5-6 overall. 
•    Anderson and Wang are both 7-5 in all doubles matches, senior Ole Lepsoe is 2-3 at number one and 6-7 overall, and the duo of Wang and senior Wesley Zhang is 2-2 this spring in dual-match competition. 

SCOUTING MIDDLEBURY
•    The sixth-ranked Panthers (4-0), who advanced to the NCAA Tournament semifinals last May, are coming off a 5-2 win over No. 13 Amherst last Sunday. 
•    Neel Epstein, who is 13th in the ITA singles rankings, is 11-7 overall, No. 23 Noah Laber is 9-3 overall and 3-0 at number two and Julian Wu has gone 2-1 at number one singles this spring. 
•    Hugh Hentschel and Thehan Wjemanne are 2-1 on the year at number two doubles. 

SCOUTING SALISBURY
•    The 32nd-ranked Sea Gulls (6-0) remained unbeaten with wins over Gettysburg (7-0) and Averett (5-2) on March 8-9. 
•    Asher Willenborg is 5-0 at number one singles and 10-1 in all matches, Gurv Suri is 5-0 at number three and Nichols O'Dea is 7-1 overall and 4-0 at number five this spring. 
•    Willenborg and Jhayden Pappas are 5-0 at number one doubles, while Gianluca Beaujon and Mitchell Desman are off to a 5-1 start at number two. 

SCOUTING GLENDALE CC
•    The Vaqueros (9-2) bounced back from their first two losses of the season with a pair of victories at Imperial Valley on March 7. 
•    Glendale went 18-4 last year and advanced to the 3C2A Southern California regional final. 

SCOUTING GRINNELL
•    The 33rd-ranked Pioneers (4-4) have dropped their last four matches and are coming off a 4-3 defeat to Iowa Central CC back on March 1. 
•    Lucas Willett is 5-2 at number two singles, Henry Park is a combined 5-2 at Nos. 5-6 and Karch Knoll is off to a 3-3 start at number four singles. 
•    The pairing of Willett and Aiden Klass is 4-4 at number doubles, while Wilder Cooke and Sam Rudenberg are 4-4 at number two. 

SCOUTING WHITMAN
•    The Blues (7-3) remained unbeaten against Division III foes with conference wins over Puget Sound (7-0) and Lewis & Clark (5-2) on March 8-9. 
•    Alexander Stage is 6-1 at number one singles, Lucas Huang is 6-2 overall, which includes a 4-1 mark at number three, and Braeden Thomas is 7-1 with victories at fourth, fifth and sixth singles. 
•    Stage and Noah Baker are 6-3 at number one doubles, while the duo of Huang and Cameron Yang is 6-2 with four straight wins at number three. 

BEAVERS SWEEP NEWMAC WEEKLY AWARDS
•    Despite the loss to Tufts, Anderson, Zhang and Wang were all honored when the conference released its weekly award winners on March 3. 
•    Anderson was tabbed as the NEWMAC Singles Player of the Week thanks to his victories over Miguel Angel Machado of Bryant at number two and a straight-set triumph over Richard Hartmann of Nichols at number one to start the spring. 
•    Zhang and Wang earned NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week accolades thanks in large point to securing the doubles point with a victory at number two in the Beavers' 4-3 win over then-No. 18 Rensselaer back on February 14. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    Babson is 18-0 going back to the start of last season when leading after doubles. 
•    The Beavers are 5-1 this season at number three and number six singles and number three doubles.  
•    The Green and White is 4-9 against top-40 opponents going back to the start of the 2023-24 campaign and 15-1 versus unranked foes with the lone loss coming to Division I Bryant on February 5, 2024. 

UP NEXT
•    The Beavers conclude their trip with matches against No. 24 North Carolina Wesleyan on Thursday and No. 32 Chapman on Friday in southern California.
