WORCESTER, Mass.—The Babson College women's swimming & diving team set one school record and maintained a hold on sixth place on the third night of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships Saturday inside WPI's Sports and Recreation Center.
The Beavers picked up 142 points on Saturday and goes into the final day in sixth place after 13 events with 301 points, up from 196 points through the third day last year. MIT holds a comfortable lead with 1113 points, Coast Guard is second with 506, and Wheaton is third with 449.
First-year
Tuana Turhan (Lake Forest, Ill.) had an excellent day in the pool in the 100 butterfly. She broke her own program record in the morning preliminaries with a time of 57.66 seconds, and bettered that record mark with a time of 57.51 for a seventh place finish in the evening 'A' finals.
Graduate student
Anya Pelshaw (Sterling Heights, Mich.) qualified for the 'A' final in a pair of events. She qualified eighth in the 100 fly and placed eighth in the finals with a season-best time of 57.62. She also qualified ninth in the 100 breaststroke in a season-best 1:07.80 and finished eighth in the finals with a 1:08.03.
First-years
Julia Netishen (Exeter, N.H.) and
Marta Gershanok (Closter, N.J.) had 'A' finals appearances for the Green and White. Netishen qualified eighth in the 100 back with a time of 59.14 and came back with a 58.93 to place eighth in the finals, while Gershanok qualified ninth in the 400 IM in a season-best time of 4:40.78 and finished eighth in the finals in 4:40.57, which puts her second on the Babson list of all-time performers.
Babson's 200 medley relay team of Netishen, Pelshaw, Turhan and sophomore
Sylvie Racicot (Arlington, Mass.) placed seventh in the 'A' finals with a time of 1:49.36.
First-year
Samantha Gilbert (Arlington, Va.) led a group of five Babson entries who competed in a 'B' final. Gilbert qualified 13th overall in the 100 fly in a time of 59.86 and finished third in the 'B' final in a season-best time of 59.46. Senior
Maggie Cassily (Rye, N.H.) qualified 18th overall in the 100 backstroke and finished sixth in the 'B' final with a 1:01.73. Senior
Kendall Garvey (Wilbraham, Mass.) qualified 19th overall in the 200 free with a time of 2:00.06 and came back with a 2:00.25 to place seventh in the 'B' final; and senior
Audrey Daniels (Santa Monica, Calif.) qualified 16th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.59, and finished eighth in the 'B' final with a time of 1:11.53.

Emily Tran (Longmeadow, Mass.), Daniels, Gershanok and Gilbert finished fourth in the 200 medley relay 'B' final with a time of 1:51.54.
The final day of the NEWMAC Championships begins with prelims on Sunday at 10 a.m., while the finals will get underway at 6 p.m.
