Women’s Swimming & Diving Comes Up Short at Wellesley, 146-138

WELLESLEY, Mass. —The Babson College women's swimming and diving team took first place in six events and finished runner-up in 11 races but came up short in a 146-138 defeat to crosstown rival Wellesley College in a dual meet Saturday afternoon inside Chandler Pool.

The Beavers drop to 7-5 overall with their second loss in their last three outings, while Wellesley wrapped up it is regular season at 6-6 in dual meets.

Senior Kendall Garvey (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the Beavers with a pair of victories. She captured the 1000 freestyle in a time of 11:12.42 and finished first in the 500 free in 5:30.88.

First-years Samantha Gilbert (Arlington, Va.) and Julia Netishen (Exeter, N.H.) and graduate student Anya Pelshaw (Sterling Heights, Mich.) also produced first-place finishes for the Beavers. Gilbert was ahead of the field in the 200 free in a time of 2:01.59, Netishen touched the wall first in the 50 free in 25.07 seconds, and Pelshaw was the winner of the 100 fly in 59.44 seconds. Gilbert also took second in the 100 fly in 1:01.32, Netishen was runner-up in the 100 free in a time of 55.69, and Pelshaw brought home second place in the 100 breast in 1:08.62.

The Beavers also finished the meet with a first place in the 200 free relay, as Gilbert, senior Audrey Daniels (Santa Monica, Calif.), sophomore Sylvie Racicot (Arlington, Mass.), and Netishen outdistanced Wellesley in a time of 1:40.02.

First-years Tuana Turhan (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Marta Gershanok (Closter, N.J.) each earned a pair of second place finishes for the Green and White. Turhan was runner-up in the 200 fly in a time of 2:12.28 as well as the 400 IM in 4:52.18 while Gershanok was second in the 100 back in 1:02.81 and the 200 back in 2:14.29. Racicot was also second in the 50 free in a time of 25.90 seconds and senior Elina Sung (Taichung, Taiwan) finished second in the one-meter diving with a score of 135.20.

Babson also featured second-place relay teams in both relay races. The group of senior Emily Tran (Longmeadow, Mass.), Daniels, Turham and Netishen finished second in the 200 medley relay in 1:51.18, and the contingent of Pelshaw, Tran, Garvey and sophomore Nicolette Newsome (Bridgewater, N.J.) were runner-up in the 200 free relay in 1:45.37.

The Green and White had several third-place finishers, including junior Jenny Chung (Cumming, Ga.) in the 1000 free (12:16.02), Racicot in the 200 free (2:07.80), Tran in the 100 back (1:03.14), Turhan in the 200 breast (2:33.67), Gershanok in the 400 IM (4:54.48), Sung in the three-meter diving (134.70) and first-year Ella Walgreen (Danvers, Mass.) in the one-meter diving (127.95).

The Beavers return home for the final dual meet of the season next Saturday, hosting Springfield in the Senior Day meet inside Morse Pool at 11 a.m.
