HARTFORD, Conn.—Senior Jarrel Okorougo (Stoneham, Mass.) poured in a game-high 27 points and No. 1 Trinity College closed the first half with a 26-5 run on the way to defeating visiting Babson College, 77-44, in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Ray Oosting Gymnasium.
Babson has dropped back-to-back games to slip to 6-3 on the year, while Trinity improves to 7-0 overall and has won 22 straight games going back to last season.
Sophomore
Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) scored 10 points, first-year
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) contributed eight points and senior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) chipped in with four points and 11 rebounds to lead the Beavers.
Okorougo was 12-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, senior Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.) also knocked down three three-pointers on the way to finishing with 12 points and seven rebounds, and junior Tristan Davis (Smithtown, N.Y.) posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards to pace the Bantams.
Okorougo scored nine of Trinity's first 13 points but Ferdinando drained a pair of triples and converted a feed from sophomore
Gavin Aydelotte (Jensen Beach, Fla.) to tie the game at the 13:25 mark. The hosts followed with seven consecutive points but Aydelotte scored inside and Mulvey buried his second three-pointer to pull the Green and White within 22-18 with 10:34 left in the opening half.
Junior Jared Berry (Danvers, Mass.) followed with four of the next six points, Okorougo scored nine straight to make it 37-20 and Vetter finished off a four-point play to stretch margin to 21 with 5:16 to go before halftime. The Bantams continued the onslaught by scoring on their next three possessions and Aydelotte broke the Beavers' field goal drought of more than 10 minutes with a layup 26 seconds before the break to go into the locker room down 50-23.
Babson cut its deficit to 59-36 following a three-pointer by junior
Jake Peterson (Hanover, Mass.) and a bucket by O'Toole with 13:00 remaining only to see the hosts answer with an extended 18-4 run that was capped by a Paul Ippolito (New Canaan, Conn.) triple to make it 77-40 with under four minutes remaining.
The Beavers shot a season-worst 28.3 percent from the floor and were just 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) from long range. The Bantams shot 53.9 percent in the first half, finished with a 52-36 edge on the glass and scored 24 points off turnovers in the win.
Babson returns to action on December 31 when it travels to Baltimore to face Johns Hopkins at 1 p.m., while Trinity hosts Hartford on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
