BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore
Angelina Holm recorded 10 kills in 11 swings for a .818 hitting percentage as Babson College defeated visiting Clark University in straight sets, 25-13, 25-11, 25-14, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's volleyball action on Tuesday night inside Staake Gymnasium.
With the win, Babson improves to 19-6 overall and 9-1 in conference play. Clark has dropped its last 17 matches to slip to 1-22 overall and 0-10 in the NEWMAC.
First-year
Liberty May (Grapevine, Texas) finished with six kills and a .750 hitting percentage to lead a balanced Beavers' attack that featured seven players with at least three kills. Junior
Zoe Ackerman (Aurora, Colo.) handed out 21 assists to go along with seven digs and two service aces, while senior
Sophia Shaw (Novato, Calif.) led all players with 14 digs. First-year
Ailsa Munro (Sylmar, Calif.) also contributed four blocks in the victory.
Graduate student Isabella Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) recorded four kills and junior Julia Dopazo (Miami, Fla.) handed out 10 assists to go along with seven digs to pace the Cougars.
The teams traded the first 10 points of the opening set before the Green and White pulled away with an 8-1 run that included three kills by Holm to forge a 15-7 advantage. The Beavers recorded 15 kills in the stanza and hit .343 on the way to a 25-13 win.
Babson scored the first five points of game two on the serve of Ackerman and got kills from sophomore
Nyapech Gony (San Tan Valley, Ariz.) and May and a pair of blocks by Munro as part of a six-point run to extend the margin to 12-2. The hosts took their largest lead of the frame on a kill by first-year
Devon Burke (Newtonville, Mass.) at 21-7 and later matched it at 24-10 on a service ace by sophomore
Emma Watts (Northport, N.Y.).
May and Holm combined for seven kills to stake the Green and White to a 10-4 advantage in the third and junior
Hailey Fouche (Montclair, N.J.) combined on a block with classmate
Nora Whitehurst (Atlanta, Ga.) and followed with a kill to push the margin to 15-6. Sophomore
Sofia Ibarra (Coral Gables, Fla.) produced two late kills and Whitehurst added another to give the Beavers their largest lead of the set at 23-10.
Babson concludes the regular season at Springfield on Saturday at 1 p.m., while Clark hosts Union on Thursday at 7 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers are now 21-22 all-time against Clark and have 14 of the last 18 matches between the teams since 2011.
• Babson, which hit .368 as a team on Tuesday night, is 14-0 this fall and has won 50 consecutive matches when finishing with a hitting percentage of .200 or better.
• Shaw has now totaled 12 or more digs in 12 straight matches.
• Munro has finished with at least four total blocks in nine of the last 12 matches and her 80 blocks this year currently rank 12th on the program's single-season list.
