Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore
Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) combined for 29 of their 39 points in the second half as Babson College erased a 12-point deficit and defeated Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, 65-59, on Friday night at the David Wells Classic.
With the win, Babson improves to 4-3 on the year. Pomona-Pitzer had its two-game winning streak snapped to fall to 3-2 overall.
Rosenberg scored 15 of her career-high 20 points after halftime and Flynn finished with 19 points, including 14 in the second half, a game-high 14 rebounds and three assists to lead the Beavers. Sophomore
Alessa Mendoza (Yonkers, N.Y.) contributed seven points, five boards and two assists, while first-year
Molly Donovan (Duxbury, Mass.) chipped in with six points, five rebounds and two assists in the win.
Junior Abigail Homan (Naperville, Ill.) finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals to pace the Sagehens. Sophomore Sara Chicco (Fort Collins, Colo.) knocked down four three-pointers and scored 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting, while first-year Avery Patricco (Boise, Idaho) chipped in with 12 points in the loss.
Pomona-Pitzer used an 8-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 42-30 with 3:35 left in the third quarter before the Green and White answered with an 11-0 spurt that included four straight points by Rosenberg, a three-point play by Mendoza and a jumper in the waning seconds of the period to pull within 42-41.
The Sagehens pushed their advantage back to three on three occasions early in the fourth but Mendoza tied the game with a jumper in the paint, Flynn followed with back-to-back three-pointers and Rosenberg canned another triple as part of a 12-2 run that put the Beavers in front for good 57-50 with 3:23 remaining. Pomona-Pitzer pulled within three twice over the 92 seconds but Mendoza answered with a bucket in the paint and Donovan buried a three-pointer to keep Babson in front 62-56 with 43 seconds left.
The teams combined to make just four of their 28 shots in the opening quarter before Rosenberg and Flynn keyed an 8-0 run that tied the game at 16-all with 5:30 left in the second. Chicco scored five points late in the period to give the hosts a 25-20 lead going into the locker room and then buried a three-pointer 59 seconds into the third quarter to extend Pomona-Pitzers's advantage to 10.
The Green and White shot 36.9 percent from the floor for the game and 50 percent in the second half while outscoring the Sagehens 28-16 in the paint. The Beavers also finished with a 50-39 edge on the glass. Pomona-Pitzer shot a season-worst 29 percent in the loss.
Both teams conclude the David Wells Classic on Saturday as Babson takes on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 8 p.m. ET, while the Sagehens face Oberlin at 6 p.m. ET.
GAME NOTES
• Friday's matchup was the first all-time between the Beavers and Pomona-Pitzer.
• Friday's contest was the first played in California for the Beavers since January 8, 2000, and they are now 3-2 all-time against members of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).
• The Green and White has been victorious in eight of its last nine games away from home going back to January of last season.
• The Beavers have won the rebounding battle in all seven games this season and 29 of their last 33 outings dating back to last year.
