BABSON PARK, Mass.—Visiting Brandeis University built an 18-point lead early in the third quarter and held off a late rally to defeat Babson College, 64-52, in non-conference women's basketball on Monday night inside Staake Gymnasium.
Babson has dropped three of its last four outings to dip to 3-3 on the year. Brandeis, which is off to its best start since the 2009-10 campaign, improves to 6-0.
Sophomore
Rylie Rosenberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) knocked down five three-pointers and scored a season-high 17 points, while junior
Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Beavers. Reale also contributed four steals, senior
Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) tied for game-high honors with 11 boards and graduate student
Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) chipped in with seven points, eight rebounds and three assists in the loss.
Junior Sofia Berisha (Old Tappan, N.J.) finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals to lead the Judges. Sophomore Saviah Shabazz (Plano, Texas) and senior Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass.) both scored 13 points in the win.
The Green and White answered an opening 12-2 run by Brandeis with a 13-2 spurt of its own that included six points by Reale and three-pointers by Rosenberg and senior
Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) to take a 15-14 lead with 1:16 to go in the first quarter. The Judges responded with the next nine points to go back in front by eight and held the Beavers to just 2-of-10 shooting while forcing 10 turnovers in the second period on the way to building a 33-20 halftime lead.
Brandeis extended its advantage to 38-20 just over 90 seconds into the third quarter, but Babson got three-pointers from Rosenberg, Flynn and Perreault while outscoring the visitors 19-8 over the final seven minutes of the stanza to cut its deficit to 46-39 going to the fourth. The Beavers got within five on a driving layup by Rosenberg on the opening possession of the frame and again on a triple by Perreault with 7:01 remaining only to see Shabazz answer with five straight points to push the Judges' lead back to 54-44 with 4:08 to go.
The Green and White made one final push using a layup by Reale and a three-pointer by Rosenberg to get as close as 54-49 with 2:18 to play but came up empty on its next five possessions allowing Brandeis to put the game away at the free throw line.
The Beavers, who finished with a 42-36 edge on the glass, shot a season-low 29 percent from the floor and committed 22 turnovers. The Judges shot 42 percent on the night and outscored the Green and White 18-7 at the free throw line.
