DARTMOUTH, Mass.—Senior Nic Boyd (Portland, Ore.) knocked down six three-pointers and poured in a game-high 31 points to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 79-62 win over visiting Babson College in non-conference men's basketball action on Friday night inside the Tripp Athletic Center.
Babson, which suffered its first loss of the season, is now 4-1 on the year. UMass Dartmouth also improves to 4-1 overall after bouncing back from its first loss at No. 19 WPI on Tuesday night.
Sophomore
Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) scored a team-high 15 points to lead three Beavers in double figures. First-year
Thomas Ferdinando (Andover, Mass.) scored 13 points and senior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) added 12 points in the loss. Senior
Tyler Lauder (Malvern, Pa.) grabbed six rebounds, sophomore
Ryan Frauenheim (Manasquan, N.J.) tied for game-high honors with four assists and both Mulvey and Ferdinando contributed two steals.
Boyd went 6-of-9 from deep and 11-of-18 overall from the floor, while sophomore Danny Reyes (Lawrence, Mass.) joined him in double figures with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting for the Corsairs. Senior Cam Dunbury (Pocasset, Mass.) added eight points and a game-high nine rebounds in the victory.
Boyd and Reyes combined for UMass Dartmouth's first 10 points as the hosts built a 13-5 lead less than five minutes into the contest. The Green and White trailed by as many as nine three times in the early going before using a 9-0 run to tie the game on a layup by O'Toole at the 10:34 mark.
The Corsairs extend the margin back to seven twice over the final eight minutes of the opening stanza but Mulvey scored 11 consecutive points in between three-pointers by sophomore
Logan Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) and Ferdinando to help the Beavers get within 43-40 at halftime. O'Toole and Mulvey converted back-to-back layups, Ferdinando knocked down four straight free throws and a tip-in by O'Toole gave Babson its first lead of the game at 50-49 with 14:10 remaining.
UMass Dartmouth responded with a 13-0 run that included a pair of triples by Boyd while holding the Green and White without a field goal for nearly eight minutes. O'Toole scored in the paint to cut the Beavers' deficit to 63-53 with 6:32 to play, but Reyes converted a layup on the ensuing possession and Boyd followed with six straight points to give the hosts a 71-55 advantage with under five minutes to go.
The Beavers, who were just 6-of-31 from the field (19.4 percent) in the second half, shot just 37.1 percent for the game and finished with a season-low six three-pointers. The Corsairs shot 47.4 percent on the night and finished with a 42-34 edge on the glass.
Babson is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Wentworth at 6 p.m., while UMass Dartmouth travels to Bates on Sunday at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 2-9 all-time against UMass Dartmouth although Friday's matchup was just the second between the teams since 1989.
• Babson scored its fewest points and finished with its lowest shooting percentage since February 8 of last season when it lost 70-52 at Springfield.
• Despite the loss, the Green and White held the Corsairs to their second lowest scoring output of the season and 22 points below their season scoring average.
• The Beavers have trailed at halftime in four of their five games this season.
