Women's Basketball Drops Home Opener to Tufts, 67-63

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Emily Flynn (Hanover, Mass.) led all scorers with 21 points and junior Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) posted a double-double but Babson College suffered a 67-63 loss to visiting Tufts University in non-conference women's basketball on Tuesday night inside Staake Gymnasium.

Babson, which has dropped two straight games, slips to 2-2 overall, while Tufts is now 2-1 on the year.

Flynn knocked down a career-high five three-pointers and grabbed nine rebounds, Reale contributed 13 points and game highs of 11 rebounds and four steals, and senior Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) chipped in with eight points and six rebounds to lead the Beavers. First-year Molly Donovan (Duxbury, Mass.) also scored eight points, while senior Allessia Carlo (Carmel, N.Y.) added six points and three assists.

First-years Tessa Lozner (Morristown, N.J.) and Abby Congdon (West Hartford, Conn.) both scored 18 points and junior Annie Ryan (Westfield, N.J.) came off the bench to score 14 points to pace the Jumbos.

Flynn and Perreault opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers and Babson got points from all five starters to build a 15-5 advantage just over five minutes into the contest. The Green and White answered a 7-0 run by Tufts to end the first quarter with the first seven points of the second, extending the margin back to 24-14. The Jumbos got 12 points from Ryan and Lozner and held the hosts to just three field goals over the final eight-plus minutes of the half to pull within 31-28 at the break.

Lozner put the Jumbos in front for the first time with a triple 56 seconds into the third quarter and the lead changed hands six times in the period before the visitors closed with a 7-0 run to stretch the margin to 50-43 on a layup by Ryan. Babson started the fourth with four straight points from Reale, Flynn knocked down consecutive three-pointers, and Perreault hit another trifecta from the right win to regain a 56-54 edge with 7:03 to play.

Reale converted a feed from Flynn just over two minutes later to make it 58-56 and Donovan canned a right-wing triple pushing the lead to five on the ensuing possession only to see Tufts score on three straight trips to go back in front for good at 63-61 on two free throws by Congdon with 2:52 remaining. Donovan went 1-of-2 at the free throw line twice around a jumper by Congdon to cut the Beavers' deficit to 65-63 with 32 seconds remaining.

Donovan went 1-of-2 at the free throw line to cut the Beavers' deficit to 65-63 with 32 seconds left and the hosts had two chances to tie the game following a stop with 16 seconds to go but were unable to finish inside.

Babson shot 43.1 percent from the floor and held a 42-28 edge on the glass. The Jumbos shot 41.4 percent and outscored the Green and White 11-4 at the free throw line while scoring 21 points off turnovers.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albertus Magnus at 6 p.m., while Tufts travels to Roger Williams on Friday at 7 p.m.
