BABSON PARK, Mass.— Sophomore
Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) scored a pair of goals as No. 6 Babson College registered a 2-0 victory over MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Tuesday evening at MacDowell Field.
With the victory, the Beavers extend their winning streak to seven games and improve to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the NEWMAC. The Engineers had a five-game winning streak snapped and drop to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
First-year goalie
Madison Tibbals (Gorham, Maine) made four saves for her second straight shutout and fourth of the season for the Beavers. Junior Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) was impressive at the other end of the field, making seven saves in the MIT goal.
There was very little offense generated by either team in the first half. The only shots in the opening quarter were a pair by MIT junior Janie Thomas (Houston, Texas) in the ninth minute, and Tibbals made back-to-back stops on both attempts. The Engineers had the only penalty corner in the opening frame in the 12th minute, which led to a shot by Wu, but it was blocked by the Beaver defense.
After Tibbals made a save on senior Bailey McIntyre (Concord, Mass.) in the 22nd minute, the Beavers scored on their first shot on goal of the game a minute later. Baroni dribbled the ball into the circle past a pair of MIT defenders and unloaded a reverse shot from just inside the arc that bounced past Zimmer and inside the left post for her eighth goal of the season.
The Beavers upped the pressure on the MIT goal in the third quarter but Zimmer was equal to the task with five of her saves. She stopped Baroni and junior
Emma Smith (Kenilworth, Ill.) on consecutive shots following Babson corners in the first three minutes, and made three saves in a three-minute stretch late in the frame on attempts by senior
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.), junior
Taylor Shoflick (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Baroni.
MIT produced a penalty corner with 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter but McIntyre's shot was kicked away by Tibbals. The Green and White added an insurance goal with seven minutes remaining when Baroni ripped a penalty stroke past Zimmer for her second of the game and ninth of the season.
Babson finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal, including 9-4 in shots on goal, and MIT had a slim 3-2 in penalty corners.
The Beavers are back in action with a NEWMAC road clash at Smith on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Northampton, Mass. MIT returns home to host Salve Regina in conference play on Friday at 6 p.m. in Cambridge.
