NORTHAMPTON, Mass.— First-year goalie
Madison Tibbals (Gorham, Maine) made four saves in the first half for her third straight shutout and fourth overall as No. 6 Babson College blanked Smith College, 3-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Saturday afternoon at the Smith Turf Field.
With the victory, the Beavers captured their eighth consecutive victory to improve to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the NEWMAC. The Bears dropped their second game in a row and fell to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Seniors
Alex Michelotti (Englewood, Colo.) and
Ally Antonacci (Skillman, N.J.) and junior
Ashley Braren (Westwood, Mass.) scored second-half goals for the Beavers, and sophomore
Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) produced a pair of assists in the win.
Smith first-year Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was strong at the Bears' end of the field, making 13 saves in goal.
After Park made three consecutive saves following a Babson penalty corner in the sixth minute, Tibbals answered with three saves of her own after a Smith corner in the eighth minute. Park made two more saves late in the quarter to keep the game scoreless heading into the second stanza.
The Beavers kept the pressure on the Smith goal in the second quarter with five corners and four shots, but Park made a pair of stops as the teams went into the break with nothing but zeros on the scoreboard.
Babson came alive with a pair of goals 90 seconds apart midway through the third quarter. Michelotti tapped a rebound into an open net after a shot by senior
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) in the 39th minute for her third goal of the season, and Braren redirected the ball into the goal near the right post on a long pass from Baroni on the left side for her third of the season as well.
With some breathing room in the fourth quarter, Antonacci scored on a similar play to the Braren goal, redirecting a cross from Baroni on the left side past Park for her first goal of the year.
The Green and White finished with a 22-4 advantage in shots on goal, including 16-4 in shots on goal, and had a 12-2 margin in penalty corners.
• The Beavers return home for their next two games, beginning Tuesday against No. 8 Bowdoin at 3 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Smith visits No. 21 Amherst for a non-conference clash on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
