Vanya Bansal (Noida, India) fired a 2-under 71, sophomore
Hannah McCarthy (Toronto, Ontario) shot a 74 and the Babson College women's golf team sits in fifth place following round one of the Polar Bear Shootout at Brunswick Golf Club.
The Beavers shot 301 to finish the opening round at 9-over, which is just four shots behind second-place Wesleyan (297). No. 6 Amherst is third at 6-over and No. 10 Wellesley (299) is two strokes ahead of the Green and White in fourth place. No. 8 Williams posted a 7-under 285 and will begin Sunday's final round with a 12-shot advantage.
Bansal made an eagle, two birdies and two bogeys in her opening round and is sitting in fourth place just four shots behind Natalie Cheong of Williams, who fired a 6-under 67. Starting on the 15th hole, Bansal made a birdie on No. 17 and another on No. 3 before carding an eagle three on the par-5 9th hole to get to 4-under for the day before making two late bogeys.
McCarthy finished the first round in a tie for 13th place with a 1-over 74 that featured three birdies and four bogeys. She made two early birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 and got back to even for the day with another birdie on the ninth hole before making a bogey on No. 11.
Sophomore
Camila Amaya (Singer Island, Fla.) shot a 4-over 75 in her season debut and is currently tied for 19th position. She birdied her opening hole, the par-5 16th and made another birdie on No. 4 before concluding the day with six consecutive pars.
Sophomore
Alice Zhu (Orlando, Fla.) is tied for 38th place that shooting an 8-over 81, while junior
Laura Lu (Chengdu, China) made an eagle on No. 9 and is tied for 46th position at 9-over after carding an 82 on Saturday.
Final round play will begin with a shotgun start on Sunday at 9 a.m.
TOURNAMENT NOTES
• Bansal is the first player in program history to finish a round at 2-under par after Amaya, Lu, McCarthy and Zhu each posted a round of 1-under last season.
• Amaya and McCarthy both posted a 1-under 72 the final round of last year's Polar Bear Shootout, boast scoring averages of 74.33 and 74.67 in three career rounds at Brunswick Golf Club.
• Bansal finished Saturday's opening round at 3-under on the par 5s, while Amaya played the par 3s in 1-under.
