Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sutherland's Brace Propels Women's Soccer Past Wellesley, 3-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Caroline Sutherland (Millville, Mass.) recorded a first-half brace to help Babson College defeat visiting Wellesley College, 3-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Babson, which has split its last four games, improves to 8-3-5 overall and 7-2-1 in conference play. The Beavers also secured a top-four seed in next week's league playoffs. Wellesley, which is now winless in five consecutive matches, drops to 6-8-3 overall and 3-5-2 in the NEWMAC.

Sophomore Josie Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) contributed a goal and an assist, while senior Meredith Greeley (Ottawa Hills, Ohio) provided her second assist of the year for the Beavers. First-year goalkeeper Maisie Creamer (Boulder, Colo.) and senior Cleo Grignard (Red Bank, N.J.) both made one save in the victory.

Senior goalkeeper Riley McNair (Cupertino, Calif.) finished with four saves for the Blue.

McNair denied Lee on a breakaway less than two minutes into the contest but Sutherland got the Green and White on the board in the 15th minute with her second goal of the season. She headed Lee's corner kick towards the upper right corner and just off the outstretched hands of McNair.

Sutherland completed her brace on Babson's third and final corner kick off the half, drilling her first touch of a service by Greeley over the head of McNair and inside the back post from the right edge of the six-yard box for a 2-0 advantage just 18 seconds before halftime.

McNair made a terrific save to deny sophomore Lillian McAughan's (Bellevue, Wash.) from close range following a free kick just over four minutes into the second half before Lee scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year by bullying her way through three defenders and touching a shot just past the oncoming goalkeeper and inside the left post to make it 3-0 in the 61st minute.

Two of Wellesley's best scoring chances of the match came just 63 seconds apart early in the first half. First-year Alice Lee (Dallas, Texas) sent her bid to open the scoring just over the crossbar from the top of the box in the eighth minute and classmate Elena Garcia (Atlanta, Ga.) was denied from 10 yards with a tremendous diving save by Creamer in the ninth minute. Sophomore Isabella Tolosa (Santa Clara, Calif.) also hit the right post from the top of the box on the counterattack in the 53rd minute.

The Beavers finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots and a slim 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Both sides conclude the regular season on Saturday as Babson hosts Emerson at 1 p.m., while Wellesley meets Mount Holyoke at 12 p.m.
