BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Isla McNae (Seattle, Wash.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute to help visiting Emerson College defeat Babson College, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Babson, which has dropped two of its last three games, ends the regular season at 8-4-5 overall and 7-3-1 in league play. Emerson snapped a two-game skid to improve to 9-5-4 overall and 7-2-2 in the NEWMAC. The Beavers will be the fourth seed and the Lions the third seed in next week's conference tournament.
Sophomore
Josie Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) had a goal and classmate
Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.) recorded an assist for the Beavers. First-year
Maisie Creamer (Boulder, Colo.) made two second-half saves in relief of senior
Cleo Grignard (Red Bank, N.J.), who stopped one shot over the first 45 minutes.
Junior Zoe Simmons (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a goal and sophomore Kelsea Laughrey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and first-year Kelsey Yoshikawa (Mililani, Hawaii) both picked up an assist for the Lions, who got six saves from sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Forman (Saratoga, Calif.).
Lee, who had a curling shot saved by Foreman at the right post in the 13th minute, notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season with a blast from just outside the box that found the upper left corner to give the Green and White a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Emerson wasted little time finding an equalizer though, as Simmons flicked a pass from Yoshikawa over Grignard for her second marker of the season less than four minutes later to make it 1-1.
The Lions went in front for good with just over 11 minutes remaining in the match on McNae's second goal of the year. A clearance by a Babson defender deflected off of McNae, who settled the loose ball and drilled it inside the left post from 20 yards.
Babson's best chance for an equalizer came in the 85th minute only to see Forman make a pair of saves to keep the visitors in front. Forman denied a blast from inside 10 yards range after McAughan broke into the right side of the box, and then corralled the rebound that had fallen to McAughan's feet to preserve the lead.
The Beavers finished with a 17-10 edge in shots while the Lions had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Babson will host fifth-seeded Wheaton on Tuesday at 1 p.m., while Emerson takes on sixth-seeded WPI on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinals.
