McCarthy, No. 22 Women's Golf Lead After Round One at Inaugural CWGC Championship

OXFORD, Pa.—Sophomore Hannah McCarthy (Toronto, Ontario) fired the low round of the day and No. 22 Babson College occupies four of the top five spots on the individual leaderboard after the first round of the inaugural Colonial Women's Golf Conference (CWGC) Championship at Wyncote Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
 
The Beavers posted a team score of 18-over 306 and own a commanding 20-stroke lead over Christopher Newport, which is second at 326. Salisbury ended the day in third place at 358.
 
McCarthy fired a 2-over 74 and holds a one-shot lead over first-year teammate Vanya Bansal (Noida, India), who carded a 3-over 75. Sophomore Alice Zhu (Orlando, Fla.) is fourth at the midway point of the championship are firing a 6-over 78 and first-year Katie Yang (Orlando, Fla.) is a shot behind her in fifth place at 7-over.
 
Sophomore Camila Amaya (Singer Island, Fla.) opened with an 11-over 83 and is tied for 10th position for Babson.
 
McCarthy bogeyed her first two holes but made three straight birdies on Nos. 6-8 to get to 1-under for the day. She followed up a bogey on the par-5 ninth hole with her fourth birdie of the day at No. 10 to get back into red numbers before carding three bogeys over the final eight holes.
 
Sitting at 4-over through her first eight holes after consecutive bogeys, Bansal played the final 10 holes in 1-under. She made her first birdie of the day on No. 9 and erased a double-bogey on No. 12 with birdies on the 13th and 15th holes to within one shot of McCarthy. 

Zhu and Yang both made two birdies in the first round and are sitting in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Amaya made her lone birdie of the day on the par-3 15th hole to slide into a tie for 10th place. 

The Beavers will begin final round play at 10:03 a.m. on Tuesday. 

TOURNAMENT NOTES
•    The formation of the CWGC was announced back in March as an eight-school, single-sport league. 
•    McCarthy, who led the field in par-4 scoring at even and birdies (4), was the only player to avoid a double bogey in Monday's opening round. 
•    Babson's team score of 305 was its second lowest in seven rounds this fall.
