MARLBOROUGH, Mass.—The Babson College men's cross country team was picked to finish third out of nine schools when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released its pre-championship coaches' poll on Thursday.
MIT, which has won all 26 conference championships going back to 1998, earned eight of nine first-place votes to once again finish atop the poll. WPI got the remaining first-place vote and came in second ahead of Babson, which finished third in the voting. Coast Guard and Springfield rounded out the top five.
Led by 22nd-year head coach
Russ Brennen, the Green and White have posted top-five results in two of the four races they've competed in this fall. They were fourth out of 17 schools in the Suffolk Short Course Classic at Highland Park in Attleboro to open the season back on August 30 and placed first out of 12 teams at the Hopkinton (N.H.) XC Festival on October 10. The Beavers finished 18th out of 34 programs at last week's Connecticut College Invitational Blue race, an event that included six of the top 10 and 11 of the top 30 teams from the latest Division III coaches' poll, and are currently ranked sixth in the USTFCCCA East Region poll.
The NEWMAC Championship 8K race is slated for Saturday, November 1, at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass., beginning at 11 a.m.
