BOSTON—Senior Cade Mallett (Gilroy, Calif.) scored the only goal of the match with just over a minute to go in the first half to help Emerson College defeat visiting Babson College, 1-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Wednesday night at Rotch Field.
Babson, which had its 36-game NEWMAC unbeaten streak snapped, drops to 7-5-3 overall and 3-1-1 in league play. Emerson, which recorded its first win in program history over the Beavers, is not 5-5-5 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference.
Sophomore goalkeeper
JB Montague (Lutz, Fla.) made four saves in the loss for Babson. His counterpart, Lions' first-year Asa Roberts (Guilford, Conn.) also turned away four shots in the victory.
Mallett notched his third goal of the season in the 44th minute, putting away a free kick from sophomore Vigo Cassidy (Culver City, Calif.) following a Babson foul to put the hosts in front. The Green and White outshot Emerson in both halves and 12-9 for the match but was unable to find an equalizer.
Sophomore
Maxi Martinez (Miami, Fla.) had two of the Beavers' best scoring chances of the game but dribbled a shot wide of the left post in the eighth minute and had his header off a free kick by junior
Will Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) tipped just over the crossbar in the 21st minute. Roberts also smothered a ball inside the six-yard box before graduate student
Albion Bacaj (Chappaqua, N.Y.) got a touch less than three minutes into the contest.
The Lions' defense allowed just one shot on goal in the second half, an 87th-minute bid from distance by Babson first-year
Will Boecher (Wellesley, Mass.). Montague made his best save of the game to keep the Beavers within a goal by diving to his left to deny a 25-yard blast by first-year Joe Picone (New Hope, Pa.) in the 77th minute.
The Green and White held a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks while the sides combined for 31 fouls in the game.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts WPI at 1 p.m., while Emerson visits No. 1 Tufts at 12 p.m.
