BRISTOL, R.I.—The Babson College women's swimming and diving team captured 10 of the 14 events to defeat Roger Williams University, 139.5-114.5, in the season-opening dual meet Saturday morning at the RWU Aquatic Center.
With the win, the Beavers are off to a 1-0 start in dual meets while the Hawks are 0-1.
Sophomores
Samantha Gilbert (Arlington, Va.) and
Tuana Turhan (Lake Forest, Ill.) led the Beavers with a pair of individual victories apiece. Gilbert captured the 200-freestyle in a time of 2:01.93 and the 500-free in 5:39.73, while Turhan touched the wall first in the 200-butterfly in 2:16.49 and the 100-fly in 1:00.86. The two also followed up junior
Sylvie Racicot (Arlington, Mass.) and sophomore
Hailey Cronan (New Market, Md.) on the winning 200-free relay team, finishing in 1:41.60.
Five other Beavers captured one individual event for the Green and White. First-year
Middy Hinckley (Trent Woods, N.C.) took first in the 1000 free in 11:37.70; sophomore
Marta Gershanok (Closter, N.J.) was the winner of the 100-backstroke in 1:04.87; classmate
Julia Netishen (Exeter, N.H.) out-touched the field in the 50-free in 25.03 seconds; Racicot came in first in the 100-free in 55.35 seconds; and first-year
Becky Hwang (Needham, Mass.) garnered the 200-yard backstroke in 2:17.91.
The Beavers finished runner-up in three races as Netishen was second in the 200 free (2:04.48) and 200 back (2:21.20) and first-year
Leila Evans (Sandwich, Mass.) was second in the 500 free (5:46.73).
The Green and White also came in third place in a half dozen events, including Gershanok in the 200 back (2:21.48) and 200 IM (2:25.25), Gilbert in the 100 free (57.09), Hwang in the 100 breast (1:17.16), senior
Vangella Randell (Holden, Mass.) in the 1000 free (12:14.31), and senior
Jenny Chung (Cumming, Ga.) in the 100 back (1:08.04).
Babson will travel to WPI for the annual multi-team meet with Brandeis, Coast Guard, and Smith on Friday, October 31 at 5:30 p.m.
